Until The Sunshine Fades

“Where’s Dani?” Isabella asked quietly, her eyes moving away from the plastic cot in front of her to glance at Elena who was watching the cot as well, a sleepy smile on her lips. The call had come out of the blue. Isabella had been just climbing out of bed when her phone had started to vibrate on the end table, but whatever complaints she had had about being disturbed so early in the day had died on her tongue the moment that Elena had sleepily informed her that the baby had arrived.

“He’s outside” Elena replied “He’s talking to his parents” she added.

Isabella’s lips quirked as she turned back to the cot. “You called me before you called Dani’s parents?” she asked.

Elena laughed. “I’d love to say something cheesy right now, but really, we forgot to bring a few things to the hospital that we’re going to need when they discharge me and you live closest to our place and have a spare key” she replied.

Isabella scoffed out a laugh, her expression softening when the baby stirred in his sleep, his eyes opening briefly. “I can’t believe that you and Dani made this little guy” she cooed “I mean, he’s just beautiful, Lena” she added.

Elena sat up slightly, smiling down at her son. “He is” she agreed.

The two of them sat quietly for a moment, marvelling at the baby until Isabella’s phone vibrated, causing her to glance down at where it sat in the lap. Letting out a quiet sigh, she watched Gerard’s picture fill the screen before she declined the call. It was something she’d done a few times since he’d left. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk to him, but she worried if she did, then they’d inevitably end up talking about the way they’d left things, and Isabella wasn’t quite sure what to say to him.

Elena, who’d glanced down at the phone when it made a noise, frowned.

Isabella lifted her head, catching the frown on Elena’s face before she shook her head. “I’ll call him back later” she murmured.

“Why’d you not answer?” Elena prodded “I mean, I would have let you back in if you’d stepped outside, and normally, you jump to answer his calls. Is everything alright?” she asked.

Isabella fixed a smile on her face before she nodded. “Everything is fine” she mused.

Elena searched her face for a moment before she shook her head. “What happened?” she asked.

Isabella shook her head. “It’s nothing” she murmured “At least, not something we need to focus on right now. You had a baby this morning, Lena. We don’t need to be worrying about what’s going on with me” she added, turning her phone over in her hands.

“The baby’s asleep” Elena pointed out “And if Dani is on the phone with his mother, then he’s going to be gone for a while, so talk to me, Izzy. You look like you need to talk to someone and given how quickly you rejected Gerard’s call, I’m guessing he’s not an option. So, what’s going on?” she prodded, offering Isabella a small, encouraging smile.

Isabella fiddled with her phone in her hands for a moment before she shook her head, a rueful smile pulling up the corner of her mouth. “We talked” she admitted “Really talked this time, not just saying what we thought the other person wanted to hear. He was honest with me, he admitted that he has feelings for me, and I...I told him that I had feelings for him, too” she added.

Elena’s eyes widened. “Are you two…?”

“No” Isabella interrupted “At least, not yet. Maybe not at all” she added.

“What?” Elena squeaked.

Isabella shrugged. “It’s complicated” she murmured.

“No, it isn’t” Elena countered “You just said it. You have feelings for him, he has them for you, there’s nothing complicated about that” she insisted.

Isabella toyed with her phone for a moment before she ducked her head, letting out a soft sigh. “I’m scared” she admitted “I know how I feel about him, Lena, and now I think I have a clearer picture of how he feels about me, and that’s obviously a good thing, but it hasn’t got rid of the things that terrify me. I am scared of losing him” she added.

“What’s your plan, then?” Elena asked.

Isabella shrugged. “He’s out of town” she mused “He’s given me some time to think about it” she added.

“What is there to think about?” Elena asked.

“I’m serious, Izzy” Elena interrupted “I get that you’re scared, but are you really just going to let the two of you live in some kind of limbo, not quite friends, not quite anything more? The guy knows you and he adores you, he’s just said as much, and you told him that you felt the same way. It isn’t as complicated as you’re making it out to be. I know you’re scared about what could go wrong, but that’s not the only possibility. Things could go right, too” she added.

Isabella nodded her head slowly.

Elena gently rubbed her shoulder. “Relax a little” she murmured “Besides, you two have practically been dating since things with Eli ended. All those dinners for two, and the inside jokes you’ve got. All that’s going to change is the chances of you seeing him naked” she added, a teasing grin splitting across her features.

Isabella let out a squeak in surprise. “Lena” she protested.

“What?” Elena replied innocently “Izzy, you guys spend a lot of time together, just the two of you. You just took the guy home and introduced him to your parents as your boyfriend, and they bought it so easily because it’s obvious to everyone but the two of you that that is what he ought to be to you. He’s a good man and you could do an awful lot worse than a guy whose biggest flaw is that he makes awful jokes. Besides, your jokes are just as bad” she added warmly.

She understood why Isabella was scared. It was going to be different and she had grown accustomed to the way things were and worried about losing it, but Elena wanted to make her see that it wasn’t that big a risk. They were already close, they already spent a lot of time alone together, and whilst things would change, the shift probably wouldn’t be as big as Isabella feared it would be. If anything, Elena could only see the two of them growing closer.

Isabella rolled her eyes, hoping Elena would ignore the pink on her cheeks. “I’m funnier than him” she mused.

“Sure” Elena played along teasingly “But seriously, Izzy. You and him, it’s only complicated if you make it so” she added.

Isabella smiled down at her lap, fiddling with her phone. “I’ll call him when I get home” she murmured.

Elena rubbed her back comfortingly, something which caused Isabella to glance back at her, smiling despite the nerves that fluttered in the pit of her stomach.
