Until The Sunshine Fades

“So, what is it that you do for a living?”

Isabella, who was swirling the last of her wine around the bottom of her glass, scoffed out a laugh, glancing down at Gerard who was leaning back on his elbows, smirking up at her. He had done it a few times. Whenever the conversation started to drift and the risk of things becoming slightly awkward increased, he asked a question that he already knew the answer to, imitating first date small talk, and it hadn’t failed to break the tension, something which made Isabella smile. There had been lulls. Throughout the evening, there’d been a handful of moments where their nerves had shown, and things had threatened to become awkward, but they had had handled them quickly, making jokes and sharing grins like they’d always done.

“I figured that’d be the one thing you would remember” Isabella retorted “I mean, it is how we met” she added.

“You can’t humour me by answering?” Gerard prodded “I am trying to get to know you, you know” he added, dramatically rolling his eyes.

Isabella scoffed out another laugh before she shook her head, finishing off her drink. “I’m a sports journalist” she said.

Gerard’s lips quirked amusedly. “Is that what you always wanted to do?” he asked.

“Gerard” Isabella warned, knowing from the look on his face what he was about to say. It was a story she had told him when she had been slightly tipsy one night, and one he had never passed up an opportunity to bring up in conversation.

“I’m just curious” Gerard pressed, barely containing his smirk.

Isabella ducked her head, her cheeks flushing pink as she let out a playful groan. “I was pretty convinced I could be a superhero until I was about eight” she said “But when I broke my leg and ended up with stitches because I jumped out of a tree, it was pretty clear it wasn’t going to happen. I probably should have figured it out sooner, saved my parents from almost passing out when I hobbled back in, covered in my own blood” she explained.

Gerard laughed before he could stop himself, causing Isabella to stretch out her leg, bumping his arm out from underneath him. Gerard fell back slightly, letting out a noise of surprise, before he shook his head, chuckling gently. “Tell me something I don’t know about you” he said after a moment, his voice softening slightly.

He liked that it didn’t feel different. He liked that he had been able to make Isabella laugh, and that the conversation hadn’t gotten stuck too many times, but he wanted to remind himself that it was a date, even if he had gone out of his way to make sure that it didn’t feel too strange for the two of them. He didn’t want it to be just another night that they had spent together.

Isabella blinked a couple of times, surprised by the sudden shift in his voice, before she lifted her shoulders in a small shrug. “What do you want to know?” she asked “You already know a lot about my friends, my family, my job. You even know too much about my ex-boyfriends. What can I say that you don’t already know?” she asked.

Gerard shrugged, smiling slightly. “There’s got to be something” he quipped.

Isabella was quiet for a moment, her fingers fiddling with the stem of the wine glass she held, before she shook her head. “I can play the guitar” she admitted “I learned to do it when I was a teenager, but I’ve never shown anyone. I sing when I play, and whilst I am sure it’s really bad, I don’t think I could handle actually hearing that, so I told everyone I gave it up so that they wouldn’t ask me to play” she explained.

“You never showed anyone?” Gerard asked “Not even Elena?” he added.

Isabella shook her head. “I love her, but she isn’t one to soften the blow” she mused.

Gerard nodded his head slowly, a soft awed smile flitting around his lips. “Can you show me?” he asked.

Isabella didn’t hesitate to shake her head, the pink on her cheeks growing a shade deeper. “Not any time soon” she quipped.

Gerard huffed playfully, something which made Isabella giggle gently before she leant over, pressing the home button on her phone. Clearing the texts that she had received from Elena, she checked the time before she looked up slightly, her cheeks flushing when she caught Gerard looking over at her. “I was just checking the time” she admitted “Not that I am desperate to get away from you or anything, but I do have a meeting pretty early tomorrow” she added.

Gerard’s lips quirked slightly, but whatever joke he had thought of, he didn’t say. “We can go whenever you want to” he mused.

“So you won’t hate me if I ask if we can start walking towards the car?” Isabella asked, her tone caught between teasing and nervous.

Gerard shook his head. “Of course not” he quipped.

Isabella smiled at him softly before she stood up, helping him to gather their things before she held her hand out towards him. Gerard didn’t hesitate, taking her hand in his as they started to walk back towards his car. Quirking a soft smile, he gently brushed his thumb over the back of her hand before he slowed to a stop, causing Isabella to stop too. Turning around, she glanced up at him with a small wrinkle between her eyebrows before he took a small step towards her, his eyes flitting between her eyes and her lips.

Isabella blinked, but eventually, she followed his lead, her stare dipping away from his eyes towards his lips.

Gerard smiled slightly. “Unai’s not here this time” he murmured.

“If you want me to kiss you, I’d suggest not mentioning my brother. It’s a mood killer” Isabella replied.

Gerard breathed out a soft laugh. “Noted” he quipped “But I was just trying to say that if you want to back out, no one’s going to do it for you. You have to decided for yourself” he added.

Isabella was quiet for a moment, mulling the statement over, before she took another tiny pace forwards. Gerard moved a hand towards her face, his thumb briefly brushing against her cheekbone before he dipped his head, touching his lips to hers briefly. Isabella felt him pull away slightly before she slowly wrapped her arms around his shoulders, drawing him back into another soft kiss that Gerard was more than happy to reciprocate.
