My Christmas Wish
Chapter 5
Duane Lee's POV:
There's knock at my door and I get up to look through the peep hole to see Leland standing there. "Open the damn door, you know its me." He says banging on it. I open it and let him walk in.
"Stop with the curse words, Presley will hear you." I say to him.
He looks around. "Oh...the neighbors kid. You're still keeping her?" he asks. "Yeah, Amira had one last test she had to take at school before Christmas."
"What do you get out of it? Hmmm? A little something something on the side?" My brother asks, elbowing me in the side and wiggling his eyebrows up and down.
I just shake my head at him. "Its not like that." I tell him. "Shut up, Presley is right over there. I don't want her to hear you talking about her mother that way."
"Oh, you've got it bad brah...you're being all defensive and protective of her...you'll be dating her before long. Hell, I'm surprised your not dating her now!." Leland says laughing.
I had to walk away from him, I didn't want anyone to know that I had fallen for Amira.
He follows right behind me, "I know that look.. you're hiding something. You cant fool me Duane Lee." he says, laughing at me.
"Fine. Yes, I like her. It just hit me last night. I was laying there thinking about not being able to see Dylan and I don't know...It just hit me. I don't know how to describe it. She's everything you could want in a woman. She's intelligent, and funny. She's an amazing mother, whose just trying to do right by her daughter, you know? And she's honest with me, I don't feel like I have to put up a front when I'm with her."
"Wow. I'm impressed DL. So, what are you going to do about it?" Leland asks.
I glance over his shoulder, Presley is watching cartoons, oblivious to what we're saying. "I'm not sure. I'll think of something. She told me last week she was thinking about moving. I cant let that happen Leland." I tell him. I walk past my brother and ask Presley is she's ready for lunch. She jumps off the couch and comes into the kitchen with us.
"I'm Presley." she says looking up at Leland.
My brother laughs and smiles down at her. "Nice to meet you Presley. I'm Leland." he says to her. "I know, you're Duane's brother. I see you on TV a lot." She tells him, climbing into the bar stool.
My brother looks over at me as I'm laughing at him. "Well, you're a very smart girl. Do you like staying over at my brothers house?" He asks her.
"Yep, he's fun to play with. And he's not mean. I like him a lot" She says while eating some chips.
"We have a good time don't we baby?" I ask as I hand her a glass of juice. She nods and continues to eat.
"Well, I need to go, busy day today." Leland informs us. "Better get busy with that plan of yours." He tells me before he walks out the door.
He was right, I needed a good plan and I needed it right now.
