Just a Freak

Awkward Ice Cream

I got two invitations today.

Caleb invited me to his house.

Dirk invited me to hang out at that beach again.

I chose Caleb.

I don't know why.

I told Dirk I felt under the weather.

He got a little weird.

He gets angry easily.

I think he has issues at home.

Caleb's sister was home from college or whatever she does.

She's exactly how I imagined her.

Wavy blonde hair, big sunglasses, designer bag at her arm.

Chewing gum.

Orbitz.

"Hey, Cal."

She calls him Cal.

What the fuck?

That doesn't even make sense.

"Who's this?"

Big smile. Fake smile.

Inspecting me.

Behind sunglasses.

"This is my friend Riley."

"Yeah?"

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah?

Why does she have to hold it out so long?

I glowered at her.

"Hey, you guys want me to take you out for ice cream or something?"

I continued glowering at her.

K shrugged.

"You want ice cream, Riley?"

"I don't care."

So we all piled into Katie's jeep.

That's her name.

Katie.

"What do you guys want to be when you grow up?" Katie asked as she pulled out of the driveway.

Please crash into the mailbox.

I couldn't stand this girl.

How did K stand her?

"A mass murderer," I mumbled.

"What's the, hon?"

She called me hon.

"I said, I'm not sure," I growled loudly.

"Yeah? You know what I'm gonna be?"

"What."

"A social worker," She turned her head and winked at K, who started chewing on his sleeve. "That'll be convenient, huh, Cal? Easier to chat, huh?"

"That's kind of rude."

"Hm?" She squinted at me in the mirror.

"It's rude that you're acting as if the only way you can talk to your brother is like a therapist."

"I never said that."

Ice cream was awkward.

"How do you stand her? Really?"

Caleb shrugged.

"I dunno. She's kind of annoying, but not that bad."

I shuddered and shook myself, then went off and sifted through his record collection.

Katie burst in.

God.

"Cal, is your girlfriend staying for dinner?"

"I'm not his girlfriend," I snapped.

"No, she's leaving before," Caleb mumbled.

"Please," I said to Caleb after Katie flounced off. "Come out to your family. The girlfriend thing is getting tiresome. I'm just lucky my Mom quit it. Finally."

"I can't," Caleb shook his head. "It'll just make me stick out more. I already stick out here like a sore thumb. I swear, I'm gonna move. To the city or something. Where I can find people like me, into art and stuff."

"Are you and Brian gonna go together?"

"If we're still together by that time."

I hope they are.

They're perfect.
