A Light in the Dark

The clock chimed midnight on the mantle in my room as I turned the page of my book. I was the only one home and didn’t mind a bit sitting in the darkness, only a lamp on the old desk beside me. Darkness didn’t bother me; it didn’t make me re live past horrors or cause a slight tingle of fear in my gut. Darkness made me feel safe; I guess that’s a pretty good thought to have when you want to be an auror.
Yet this next year at Hogwarts, my last, could totally change the meaning of darkness to me. Rather than safety, darkness would make me want to run till I couldn’t run anymore. Darkness, what first was a refuge to me, would become something to run from.
Unless of course, I had a light.
