Linger

Prologue

He was driving too fast. He knew that, but it didn’t slow the car down. His foot was hard on the acceleration. The sky outside was inky blue, littered with stars. The open window allowed the strong breeze to whip his dark hair across his brown eyes. It was obvious he had been crying by the red marks ringing his eyes, a lone tear slipping down his cheek. His breathing was shallow, but it sharpened as he took a corner, almost tipping the car on its side.

Trees and buildings passed by in a blur, an astounding mix of greens and brick red ripples, but Brian Haner didn’t notice. His mind was void of all beauty, all happiness and joy. He had been driving for almost an hour, gunning the road at over eighty miles per hour. He had to get away. Away from the town, away from the people who knew him, away from everything.

That’s when his world turned black.
