Close My Eyes, and Fly - Beach Brawl

The cool night breeze tickled the back of Aaron’s neck as she sat in the sand a few yards from the bonfire. She was secluded in a spot hidden behind the deserted men’s bathrooms that reeked of sea water and urine.
There she sat, staring out at the waves as they crashed against the shore time and time again. She could hear the laughter and playful banter of her companions but she didn’t want to join them. Instead, she made her way over to the water, daringly dipping her toes in the icy ocean and then recoiling back just inches from the water line. She played this game with herself for a few minutes until she heard footsteps in the sand behind her.
“ Is everything all right?” The voice said. Aaron recognized the comforting voice and turned to meet a pair of piercing blue eyes.
“Yeah, I’m fine Maddie” she said, staring down at her sandy toes awkwardly.
“ Look, Aaron , I heard you and Jack aren’t friends anymore” Madison started, she had moved closer to Aaron, tucking a piece of her waved black hair behind her ear. “and I can’t pretend that I’m not really relieved.” she continued.
Aaron glanced up from the design she had been swirling into the sand with her toes. “Yeah, I guess theres nothing for you to worry about now” she said, her voice trembling as she tried to maintain her cool.
“I’m really sorry I didn’t trust you” Madison said, reaching out to touch her best friend. Aaron pulled away her arm, and stared up at her in disbelief.
“I told you there was nothing going on and you threw me away like I was an old gucci bag” She shot bitterly. Madison flinched and bit her lip, defensively wrapping her arms across her torso she glanced back at the bonfire as if searching for support.
“I was afraid that you were trying to steal the first good thing thats come into my life” she replied. Aaron couldn’t help but scoff.
“The first good thing? This coming from the rich girl who hasn’t lifted a finger her entire life.” she replied, her voice was dripping with hatred.
Madison’s eyes opened in shock. Aaron couldn’t help but be a little surprised herself. She had never been one to stand up for anything and here she was telling her ex best friend that she was a spoiled brat.
“ So this is how you repay me after everything I’ve given you?” Madison said, clenching her fists as she stepped closer. Aaron gritted her teeth.
“ I have nothing to repay to you.” she said shortly. She could feel her temper rising as Madison scoffed in return. “You have been a shitty friend and I can’t believe I’ve dealt with your bullshit for so long” she continued. “ I’m done talking to you. I’m done WITH you”.
With that Aaron turned to walk away down the beach. There was a moment of silence and then she felt a rough shove from behind, and sharp nails digging into her scalp as she fell to the ground.
“ You are such a jealous bitch!” Madison cried, yanking at Aarons hair as she tackled her to the sand. Around them they could hear cries of horror and amusement from the other party-goers that were rushing over to watch.
“Cat fight!” One of the boys yelled, as the crowed surrounded them.
Aaron struggled to defend herself, covering her face as Madison continued to claw at her. Finally she broke free and shoved Madison back into the sand. She raised her fist to take the first hit when her wrist was caught from behind.
“I know you don’t want to do that” a soothing voice said in her ear. Their grip was unrelenting as Aaron struggled to finish what was started, but she stopped and glanced back at Jack who was staring at them with awe struck eyes.
“ Stay out of this Jack” she spat, struggling to rip her wrist from his clutch. He looked at her softly and then scooped her up around her waist, dragging her away from Madison.
“ Yeah, because watching you two kill each other is a much better idea” he mumbled, walking away from the circle of people that were wrestling Madison away from following them.
“We are so not friends anymore!” she shouted after them before shaking her arms loose and storming off down the beach.
Jack tossed her to the ground when they were clear of other people and plopped down next to her.
“Whats your problem?” she said, brushing off the sand from her dress and rubbing her wrists. “Do you always just scoop people up like the freaking hulk and toss them over your shoulder like that?” she grumbled.
Jack sat in silence staring at the waves as they gently washed towards the shore.
“What was that all about?” he finally asked, glancing over at her, his chocolate brown eyes were hollow and sad.
“She had it coming” Aaron mumbled, tossing a seashell off into the distance.
“Yeah and I’m sure if I ask her she’ll say you had it coming too” Jack said he gave a slight smile but Aaron didn’t return it.
He stood and paced in front of her, kicking sand in frustration. “ And why the fuck are you here with that asshole!?”
Aaron opened her mouth to yell back, but she paused, he had a point.
“He asked me if I wanted to come to a party and I said yes.” she said finally, trying to sound indifferent. she stood and brushed off her dress again. “I don’t have time for this, I’m going home.” she began to turn to walk away when Jack yelled after her.
“ So the fact that he was and probably still is cheating on you has no affect on your relationship whatsoever?!” He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration, glancing back over the water.
“Fuck you Jack.” she spat, slapping him unexpectedly across the face. “My relationship is none of your business. Just like I couldn’t give a flying fart in space about yours” she was fuming now, and began walking away quickly down the beach.
Jack stood there with his arms at his sides watching her as she went.
“Because if you didn’t care you would be trying to make me jealous by making out with that asshole” he yelled after her. Aaron froze, and considered turning around to slap him again, but she kept walking.
“Yeah you wish” she yelled before sprinting down the beach towards the parking lot.
