The Beauty That I'm Faking Lets Me Live My Life Like This
Gerard's Point Of View

Lost in thought, I wandered the streets. I didn’t have to be home at any specific time, nor did I want to be home. I was walking past the drugstore when I heard a girl scream. I whipped around the corner to find Cassie pinned against the wall by Kyle. I froze; did he know that I had been obsessing over her? Frantically, I looked around for something to distract him. There was no use in trying to fight him. I happened to glance up, and saw Levi on top of the building, taking aim. He squeezed the trigger of his gun, Kyle froze, blood oozing from the fresh bullet wound in his back. He collapsed, leaving Cassie horrified. She ran, directly for me. I stood, transfixed at the scene before me. Kyle dead, Levi looking for a way down from his perch, Cassie, running full speed toward me, not looking at me. She collided head on with me and stopped, I wrapped my arms tightly around her. I could feel her heart beating, her breathing started to return to normal. Cassie looked up into my eyes, realizing who I was; she wrapped her arms around me,

“Cassie, you okay?”

She looked back at me with those piercing green eyes that clearly stated ‘no’.

“What do you think?” she choked out, near tears.

“Listen, I know this doesn’t seem logical right now, but you have to get home, now.”

“Okay”

“I’ll walk you to your car.”

“Don’t have one, well I do, but I don’t drive it to work. I walk.”

“How long of a walk?”

“Twenty minutes, max.”

“Okay, lead the way.”

She looked into my eyes again, trying to see if I was trying to get at something. My arms slid from her back down to her waist. She seemed satisfied, and turned around leading the way. I noticed she was shivering, not necessarily because of the cold, more because of shock. I still took my jacket off and put it around her shoulders. Her shivering seemed to lessen and again she looked at me gratefully. She moved closer to me, feeling safer. Walking with me in the middle of the night is probably the safest thing one can do. I’m scarier than anything that will harm you. Within fifteen minutes of starting we arrived at her apartment. She fished the keys to the door out of her purse and turned to face me, my hand still on her one hip.

“Gerard, thanks, I… I…”

“Don’t mention it. Just go to sleep, everything will seem better in the morning.”

“But, I just witnessed a murder didn’t I?”

“Technically yes”

“Aren’t the police going to want to talk to me?”

She looked so helpless. I couldn’t tell her the truth, think! I need to get her off my
back and others…

“In normal circumstances, yes, they would. But I happen to know that man worked for the
Mafia. So it’s better if you don’t tell anyone.”

“He didn’t work for the mafia. He had fangs. I saw them! He tried to bite my neck!”

I felt so bad for doing this but I had to.

“Are you sure you’re okay? That guy didn’t have fangs. You better get some sleep, it’ll all be
better in the morning.”

“Okay, I trust you.”

She put the key in the lock and opened the door. She glanced at me one last time. I slid my hand off her waist and grabbed her free hand. I kissed her hand lightly.

“Goodnight”
