Two Hearts to Make a Maniac

Chapter Twenty-Two

It had only been about twenty minutes that Gordon had left before he came charging back in. Though, I wasn't particularly bored. Some guy had been thrown into the cell RAVING about how his insides hurt. Seriously, I was getting to the point where I was going to kill him. Joker obviously could sense it because he bent down and said:

"He's not going to die, not just yet." He giggled, leaving me flabbergasted.

Soon, two cops came in and yanked both me and the Joker up, dragging us off to the interrogation room. Oh joy. Surprisingly, the Joker was thrown into the room and I was just left standing looking into the room. Gordon came in and stopped, pointing a finger at me.

"You, you watch to see what you've gotten yourself into." He growled walking into the interrogation room. I snorted and rolled my eyes looking back in the room.

As Gordon walked in, the door squeaked terribly behind him. The sound made my skin crawl.

"Evening, Commissioner…" The Joker drawled as he sat in the poorly lit room. Seriously, pitch-freaking- black.

Gordon sat in the chair opposite him, clasping his hands in front of himself. "Harvey Dent never made it home." He put out.

"Of course not," This made me giggle, earning glares from several of the cops.

"What have you done with him?"

Even in the dark, I could see Joker's face turn into mock shock. "Me? I was right here." He defended showing his cuffs. "Who did you leave him with?" He asked pointing a finger at Gordon. "Your people, hm? Assuming they still are your people, and not Maroni's. Does it depress you Commissioner? To know, just how alone you really are?" He paused for a moment, adding to the "dramatic effect." "Does it make you feel responsible for Harvey Dent's current predicament?"

"Where is he?" Gordon spat.

"What's the time?" The Joker asked in return.

"What difference does that make?" Gordon sighed staring at him blankly.

All the people around me were tense, and on edge. Me, on the other hand, I was getting a fucking kick out of his.

"Well," He started clicking his teeth, "depending on the time he could be in one spot, or several."

Gordon stared at him for a moment, debating something mentally. Reaching into his pocket he took out a key and twirled it in his hands. "If we're gonna play games," He started unlocking the Joker from his cuffs, "I'm gonna need a cup of coffee."

"Ah… the good cop bad cop routine?" The Joker chuckled.

Gordon turned around, smirking. "Not exactly." With that he walked out, and came behind the glass, standing right by me. I stared at him curiously and he just pointed back at the room.

Suddenly the lights flickered on in the interrogation room making the Joker squint his eyes as a dark figure towered above him. Taking in a sharp breath I got ready to yell but someone's hand slapped over my mouth.

The dark figure, the real Batman, slammed Joker's head down on to the table. "Never start with the head," he explained holding his own, "the victim gets all fuzzy. You can't feel the ne-" Without warning, Batman slammed his fist down onto the Joker's. I started to struggle, but another cop behind me kept my arms firmly in place. "See?"

Batman sat down where Gordon had been. "You wanted me, here I am."

Even in this situation, I couldn't help but twist those words around to a totally different meaning.

"I wanted to see what 'ya'd do, and you didn't disappoint." He said calmly raising his brow. "'Ya let five people die," He started shaking his head slightly, "then you let Dent take your place." Joker continued raising his lip making a strange face. "Even to a guy like me, that's cold."

"Where's Dent?" Batman asked disregarding what the Joker had just said.

"The mobsters want you gone, so they can get back to the way things were." He said doing the same as Batman. I laughed into the person's hand, it must be fun toying with the Batman. "But I know the truth, there's not going back. You've changed things. Forever." He explained leaning onto the metal table before him.

"Then why do you want to kill me?" Batman asked, monotonously as usual.

The Joker broke into a small fit of laughter. "I don't want to kill you!" He laughed. "What would I do without you? Go back to rippin' off mob dealers? No. No, no. No, you, complete me." He proclaimed putting a hand over his heart.

I let out a giggle, only to be slapped in the back of the head by the angry cop. Ripping free from the hand that held my mouth, I snarled at him. "You keep doing that and I'll be taking away the only thing that's keeping you a man." I growled turning back to the room.

"Your garbage who kills for money." Batman grumbled his voice raspy, I wonder if he's sick or something. Normal people don't talk like that.

"Don't talk like one of them, your not!" The Joker snapped his voice rising. "Even if you'd like to be." He added leaning back in his chair. "To them your just a freak. Like me! They need you right now, when they don't, they'll cast you out. Like a leper. You see their morals, their "code", it's a bad joke." All the cops got angry at that one. "Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you, when the chips are down, these civilized people, they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster," He stopped patting the table and leaning forwards, "I'm just ahead of the curve."

The Batman flew forwards and grabbed him. I tugged against the arms behind me, not liking where this was going. "Where's Dent?" Batman demanded.

"You have all these rules and you think they'll save you!" That earned him getting smashed against the walls.

All the cops looked towards Gordon, but I stared straight ahead. "He's in control." He muttered.

"I only have one rule." Batman growled.

"Ooo! Then that's the rule you have to break to know the truth." The Joker chuckled.

"Which is?"

"The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules, and tonight your gonna break your one rule." He said, his voice dwindling down to a whisper.

"I'm thinking about it."

"There's only a couple minutes left, so your going to have to play my little game if you want to save one of them." He taunted Batman.

"Them?" Batman asked, caught off guard.

"You know for a while there, I thought you really where Dent." The Joker rasped tugging at Batman's arm trying to get breathing room. "The way you threw yourself after her!"

I could see Batman's eyes widened. He swung the Joker over his head slamming him down on the table. I felt myself began to tremble with anger as I watched. Gordon ran towards the door, but Batman had already blocked it with a chair.

"Oh-hoo-hoo! Look at you go!" Joker teased from the table. Getting up he popped his back and stretched. "Does Harvey know about you and his little boogie-"

He didn't get to finish as Batman threw him against the glass, cracking it. "Where are they!?" He demanded.

"Killing is making a choice." The Joker said only to be hit down again. I cursed and tugged more, only to have several more cops hold me down.

"Where are they!?" Batman screamed again.

"Choose between one life or the other!" The Joker said, un-phased. "Your friend the district attorney or his blushing bride to be!" Once again Batman sucker punched him in the jaw. "Oh-hoo! You have nothing-nothing to threaten me with!"

Suddenly, Batman's head snapped towards the one-way mirror, as if staring directly at me. He yanked him up and dragged him towards the window. "What about her? Huh?!" He yelled pressing his face to the mirror.

I yelled and banged my head against the window, screaming for him not to do anything. The Joker's face contorted slightly, before going back to normal. "Well don't worry I'll tell you where they are. And that's the point! You'll have to choose! He's at 252 Second Street, and she's on Avenue X Assiro! Better hurry!"

The Batman threw him on the ground and rushed out. Gordon left my side to go after him. "Who are you going after?" He called.

"Rachel!" Batman said going off.

Gordon called several police officers and they went off for Dent. Now, only two other officers remained. The fat one and some other dude, the fat one going into the room the other staying with me. Well this wasn't going to last long.
