Negative Ten Degrees

I exhaled my smoke into the winter air. I was shivering. A scrolling sign across the street announced that it was 5:45 and -1˚. I took another drag on my cigarette. My thoughts where wandering aimlessly. I shifted my feet, switching the cig to my left hand and shoving my right one into my coat pocket.
I looked at the sign again:

5:47; -2˚.

The bus was late. What a wonder public transportation is.
No one else was there to bear the cold with me. Oh well, that would only have meant awkward smalltalk.

5:48; -3˚

I hated waiting. My cigarette had gone out. I reached into my bag searching around for my pack. Pulling it out- Damn- no more left. I sighed and tossed the empty box into a trashcan. I delved back into my bag and pulled out a book. Huck Finn. I had a reading assignment due tomorrow.

5:50; -4˚

I flipped through the book, opening it at random pages, not really reading it. I don't care if it's an american classic. I don't like it. I stowed it back in my bag.

5:51; -5˚

I checked my pocket, making sure that my money and ID where still there. Student discounts come in handy, I didn't want to pay the extra dollar if I had somehow lost it. I checked to see if the bus was coming.

5:55; -6˚

I started to pace. All I wanted was to go home and relax. I had had a somewhat stressful day at school.

5:56; -7˚

I was behind in my math work. Algebra II. I wasn't even allowed to solve the problems with shortcuts, no, it was Mrs. Williamson's way or the F way.

5:57; -8˚

I could drop out of school. Just stop going. But as much as I hated it I also loved it. Besides, what would my friends do without me?

6:00; -9˚

Probably get on with their lives. I can't help feeling a little bitter, after a- There's the bus.

6:01; -10˚
