SHH! There's a Killer in the House

Tigard, North Dakota, that’s where I headed to. Jace gave me the thumbs up and the business unlimited credit card to use as I needed it. I booked a hotel room at the little bed and breakfast place in Tigard’s historic district called Janna’s Teddy Bear Resort & Spa. The air chilled my skin as I looked up and down Main Street. Everything sat quietly in its place under the early morning sky. Two o’clock in the morning had a way to outline everything in the moonlight in a way that would take away anyone’s breath if they hadn’t ever seen it before.

But, I’ve seen it before so it didn’t hold me in my spot to stare at it for a length of time. Instead I headed towards the river. Memories of sneaking down here with my brother and his girlfriend, Vanessa with a six-pack and half full bottle of Jack Daniels rolled into my head. Vanessa and Burke would kiss long and hard in the tall weeds on the bank as I would stare into the sky and drink away all the problems in the world. We made quite a trio; Burke and I were the bad-asses that moved in with our mother after our father died and Vanessa was the mayor’s daughter that was the “good girl” of the school that was the caption of the cheerleading team. With the three of us, we rocked St. Moore High School and put it on its toes.

Once we graduated, top three of our class, we were going to move to Hollywood and start our new lives as tattoo artist and club owners. We were going to make millions. But then Burke got in too deep in with loan sharks. He got in real deep with the sharks, trying to start all of our businesses. He borrowed over half a million and owed them over a million. After not having the money for them by the due date, the hit was taken out on him. We got jumped going home one night. Vanessa barely escaped with my help; I got a knife in the guy holding her and made her run for help. That was the last time I saw her and that was the last time she saw him. Burke and I were tortured and beaten then finally we were dragged to Angel’s Island. I watched Burke receive a bullet between the eyes and fall into the crashing water.

I looked around the little dock we used to sit on. A boat was tied to the dock. I swayed and moved with the water slowly. Seven Sins was written in a gothic font along the side of the boat. “Well, I’ll be damn, she kept the name alive,” I whispered. It was the name of the club Vanessa managed.

“Yeah, I couldn’t just give up the name,” a voice of the past whispered. I turned and looked at Vanessa. Her eyes still glow a strong, fiery green. Her used-to-be bobbed cut hair now sat below her shoulders in a soft, light brown. “Hello, Landon, it’s been a while.”

“Vanessa,” I caught one of her hands it my and kissed her knuckles. “You look lovelier then the last time I saw you.”

I watched my body dance with itself. My body moved gracefully in its light blue ball gown. I thought of Sleeping Beauty in the finally scene when she was dancing with her prince. That’s what my body was doing, just missing her prince. The dress I was even wearing matched the one from the movie. The music had my body going and moving. Then it stopped.

A dark, evil shadow started to fill the room. “It’s over, princess. It’s all over.” The shadow sang as it twisted and turned around my body. “You’re going to die!” It screamed at me.

“NO!” I woke up screaming. Sweat dripped down my skin. “Oh, God!” I cried. The dream scared me. The voice sounded like Alyssa’s crackly voice and its words wouldn’t leave my head.

The little room seemed to be closing in on me with each tear. The darkness of the room scared me. Searching blindly, my fingers moved across the wall, feeling for a light switch. There was none! My breaths became raged and harsh. The air in the room became too thin for me to breath. “HELP! HELP ME!” I screamed at the top of my lungs until my throat burned.

“What brings you to Tigard?” Vanessa asked her guest, sipping on the coffee she just made for the both of them. She smiled as she watch him add two spoonfuls of sugar, a dash of cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon like he used to do when he was young.

“Business, why else?” He flirted causally like he did when they were younger.

She rolled her eyes. “That’s a lie and you know it.”

“Ok, I am here on business but I wanted to see how you were doing. I heard you moved back here and finally I got the time to see how you were.”

“That sounds more like the true to me,” she offered him one of her homemade cookies. “So, what kind of business are you doing?”

He took a bit of the walnut and chocolate chip cookie. “The kind that keeps me on my toes.”
