“-So I have a question for you and I want an honest answer; Do you love my granddaughter?”
I sat there with my mouth hanging slightly open “Well…”

I cleared my throat and looked at her “I, um well I don’t know.”

She sighed “Well you either do, or you don’t. Would you risk your life for hers? Would you willingly jump off a bridge to save her from falling? The answer to those questions is the same to the question about love. So?”

I didn’t answer for a second. Or maybe it was a minute…could have been ten really. “Err, I think…well I think the answer to those questions is, maybe in time. Not at the moment though. But I do like her a hell of lot! If that makes you feel any better, but…”

She raised her eyebrow “Carry on.”

“But Allison doesn’t like me. In fact she probably hates me…”

Allison’s grandma sat up slightly “Why would that be?”

“Why’d you want to you?”

“Because Allison is my only grandchild and I want to protect her from things that could hurt her, and potentially that is you.”

I shuffled around in my seat a bit, slightly unsure of whether to say anything, but finally I decided I would “Because I said something out of anger that I didn’t mean, and that made Allison mad at me.”

She nodded “And have you apologized to her? Have you told her that it was out of anger and that you really do like her?”

I blushed slightly red and shook my head making Allison’s Grandma purse her lips “And why not?”

“Because…err…because I umm…I don’t know.”

“Or is it because you’re too proud? Don’t want your ego being squashed? You know I used to be like you; I knew I’d done something wrong and I was sorry. I truly regretted it, but I would never ever apologize. And do you want to know what it cost me? It cost me my daughter. If I would have apologized then maybe I could have spent the years she had left with her. But I didn’t. Not even when I found out she was going to die did I apologize. Not once. That is the one thing I regret most.” She got up and walked over to the window, looking out and smiling slightly “Don’t make the same mistake as me. Yes the situations are different, but the outcome will be the same, and if Allison is anything like her mother then once you’ve lost her you may never be able to get her back. Don’t lose her.”

I stared at the old woman in front of me. She looked like an older version of Allison, except she had grey hair and no eyeliner on. Finally Allison’s grandma turned around and sat back down “I’m going to give you something and I want you to give it to Allison when the time is right. If that time never comes, then I hope you’ll look after it and give it to someone you care for.” She gently got out a velvet box that contained the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen. “I don’t know how much it cost’s now, but back when my late husband proposed to me it cost quite a lot.”

It was a gold ring with a diamond carved in the shape of a heart “Wow” I whispered staring at the ring

“Well take it! I’m not holding it out to you just for the fun of it.”

I picked the bow up and examined the ring. It was amazing.

Allison’s grandma stood up and I put the ring in my pocket for safe keeping. “Well I think that’s all. Come along.”

I followed her back to where Allison was sitting and she showed us the door. “Well your grandma’s certainly…something.” I whispered making Allison laugh slightly

“What did you talk about?”

“Stuff.”

She raised her eyebrow “Stuff?”

“Yeah, stuff.”

“Like what?”

“Like the fact that I’m a coward for being to afraid to tell you I’m sorry, and that I really really like you and have not stopped thinking about you since the kiss.”

Allison looked slightly taken back then smiled “So is that your way of saying sorry?”

“Yeah, that and I was wondering whether you could be my girlfriend.”

“But aren’t we like already dating…?”

I shook my head “Nope, I never asked you. Normally people do date before they get married, but we’re just to cool to do that.”

Allison smiled “Yes then, I will be your girlfriend.”

And then I did something I’d wanted to do in a long time.

I kissed her
