Just as Miles finished flicking through the documents DI Lachlan walked into the room.
“'afternoon Sir.” he stated as he walked around to his console and turned it on. The monitor rising out of the desk slowly.
“Drop the 'Sir' please, I want to keep this informal as possible.” Miles responded as he looked up from the terminal screen.
“Informal? This is a very serious case.” Lachlan replied.
“Yeah, but the last time I kept a strict work ethic in an MIS someone cocked up.” Miles grunted, typing furiously into the console trying to get the X11 windowing system to start up.
“Point taken, keep the atmosphere calm and motivated. But how with these damn computers.”
“It is the fact they switched to Linux under my recommendation is why I am kicking myself. More good than bad, but the bad is awful.”
“How do I get my desktop up again?”
“Type 'startx' once you have logged in.”
There was a ping from Lachlan's console meaning it had started successfully. Miles' being the head machine was more server oriented so less graphically ended. It was causing him problems. Eventually he got it started just as Travers decided to show up. Miles stood at the top of the table and waited for silence.
“Ok people, listen up, there has been a break in the old 'Snow Twins' case from 1988, some of you may remember it, some of you were just children. This is serious, and the director has placed it on my shoulders. I selected you all because I think you are the best for this job, I may feel the need later to bring more people in, but the 'force is stretched enough as it is, so I am relying on you. To start, we will go over the old case-files and familiarize ourselves with them. I have sent the old case-files in .pdf format to all your consoles. Let's get going. Feel free to ask any questions.”
Miles sat down and opened the file on his own system and read it for what felt like the millionth time in that one day.
