La India

One Last Confession

Two weeks after her return she kissed me. I was too shocked to kiss back. Her eyes bore into me until I finally spoke.

“Sorry,” I mumbled. “I didn’t think that would ever come.”

“Miguel,” she said my name with such tenderness, “I can’t make you suffer anymore. If we are going to raise this child together, you must know the truth about me.”

I wasn’t sure how to reply.

She sighed, “I left as soon as I found out about my pregnancy. For weeks I stayed on the streets and starved, hoping the baby would die and I wouldn’t have to face this. It survived all this time. I believe it’s strong like my ancestor’s women. Maybe it’s a girl, Miguel, but I’m not sure.” She stopped for a long time then breathed, “I came back because I kept having premonitions about this baby and you. After a while, I knew you and your grandmother wouldn’t think less of me because of this child. If anything, Miguel, I hope it makes our love much stronger.”

She stopped again and kissed me. I kissed her back with so much wanting. Manzanita smiled at me for the fist time in a long time.

“I love you, Miguel, and I love our child. I hope you’ll be able love me and her as much as we need to be.”

“Don’t worry, mi amor,” I whispered. “All my love will be for both of you, and only the two of you.”
