Somehwere Between Hell and Zombies

The Beginning of the End

I remember so clearly the power going out. It wasn't really a surprise, Montgomery

was a small town with no immediate power source. the nearest plants were at least fifteen

miles away. Derek lived only four blocks from me so we decided to go back to my house for

breakfast. As we turned one of the last corners before my house, we saw Mr. Parker the

mail man down on his hands and knees. We couldn't see what he was doing, but we could

hear a slurping sound and bones crunching. When we finally got close enough we saw his

dog beneath him. Ricochet, the black German Shepard always went with Mr. Parker on his

route.

"Mr. Parker, are you okay?" I asked quietly hiding behind Derek. The slurping and crunching

ceased as Mr. Parker looked up at us. His face covered in blood. His lifeless eyes regained

some light, a glow of sorts as he saw us, more food. As we backed I let out a

squeak and he stood slowly with a look of hunger in his dead eyes. We kept backing up

trying to stay away from whatever he had become. He walked really slow and kept trying to

talk. As we got back to the main street, I bumped into something. I turned around and was

face to face with Mrs. Wilkins the pharmacist. She too, had lifeless eyes but no blood

covered her face. At least not yet.

Derek took my hand, and pulled me away.

"what are those things?" I yelled

" I don' t know, but lets get to your place, it is closer now anyways." Derek yelled back as we

crossed the last street to my house. I ran ahead of Derek and up the stairs, pushing open

the door. I remember so vividly smelling the blood before I saw it all over the floors and

walls. What I saw next was horrific. I barely made it out the door before throwing up

wretchedly.

Derek came over and put his arm around me, leading me back into the house.

The blood, we found out shortly was from my saint Bernard Teddy. He lay on the floor by the

kitchen sink. The top of his skull was missing, and his eyes beginning to sink back into the

remainder of his head stared up at us helplessly. I choked back the tears as we passed the

poor dog."

"Mom, dad?" I whispered. I could barely talk now, and was really scared and weary. I looked

carefully around the house, holding on tightly to Derek's arm. We heard a noise on the other

side of the door to my parents room. Derek grabbed a fire place poker from the stand by the

wall and pushed the door open with caution.
