The Nursery Rhymes of Kira Simbeck: Part 1

I stir with a start
My hands shake, my eyes dart

My hands fumble the lamp on
Oh, the dark seems so deceitful
Underlying and deceiving
Monsters hidden somewhere deep
They disturb me in my sleep

They follow me in my wake
Take on a new kind of shape
Slither and lurk like shadows in the night
Then vanish completely from human sight

I’d thought I’d heard a scream,
And I’m sure it wasn’t just a dream

The neighborhood wakes
Voices call out
First there were few,
Then many began to shout

I jump from the bed,
Dare to scamper to my window
Down below, like ants
They swarm in confusion

A draft blows through my room
I swear on my mother’s eyes I’d seen-
A bank of black stormy clouds from nowhere
Arriving on the disheveled scene

It surrounds my home for the slightest second
And drifts far, far away
I felt an evil ail me
Though I could not say

After a spell, they begin to recede
Grey cloaks the skies
I feel the dawn weigh down my eyes

Though I doubt that anyone could sleep now
