The Biggest Fan

The Long Night.

“THUMP!”
I woke up, immediately lifting my head up, noticing a bright light coming from the kitchen area.
I spotted a person, but I couldn’t identify the shadow as I peered, trying to follow the movements.
As I leaned forward, climbing out of the king-size bed, I gently brushed Bert’s chest while I was fumbling my way to the floor, making him moan as he turned over, slapping his hand on my pillow.
God, it would’ve hurt if I had my head there.

As I quietly made my way on the floor, I suddenly realized it was Quinn being in the kitchen, sticking his head into the fridge.
“Hi”, I said, causing him to jump.
“Hey! You scared me there”, he responded, taking a deep breath.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to. Why are you still up? It’s almost 3 am”.
“Oh, I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to have a lil´ snack”, he said scratching his bare, hairless chest. “Want something to eat?”
“No, no thank you. I’m fine”, I answered, rubbing my eyes as I looked over at the king-size bed where Bert was lying. Now snoring loudly.

“Well, I’m gonna go to bed now, so…”
“Yeah, you do that. Sorry I woke you up. I’ll be more quiet next time. And by the way, you can use as much of my shampoo and conditioner as you want”, Quinn said smiling as he looked at me while taking out a sandwich from the fridge.
“Thank you”, I responded as I saw him leave the kitchen.

I wasn’t sleepy anymore, so I decided to take a glass of milk, hoping it would make me fall asleep later.
While I poured the ice cold milk into a glass, I heard footsteps not so far away from where I was standing.
“Hey”, the shadow said, still walking towards me. “You still up?”
It was Jepha. He was wearing nothing but a plain white tee and some red boxers.

“Yeah”, I said, answering his question.
“You know it’s ten passed 3 am, right?”, he then asked, looking up at the wooden clock that was hanging over his head.
“I couldn’t sleep and, well, Quinn woke me up”.
“Ah, you too? That bastard. Well, you have to understand him, he isn’t the most discreet person you’ll meet”, he said grinning, making his snakebites rise.
I smiled at him before taking a sip of my milk, swallowing it slowly, which actually did make me feel sleepier.

“So, what’s the thing about you and Bert?”, Jepha then asked, looking at me with a confused look.
“What do you mean?” I could tell my voice was getting nervous, without even knowing why.
“About you guys sleeping together”.
“Sleeping together?!”, I repeated, almost shouting as I choked on my milk.
“No, fuck, no!”, he said laughing. “I mean sharing the same bed. What’s up with that?”.

I caught my breath, feeling like an idiot.
“Oh…”, I stuttered, trying to find an explanation. “Well, you see, Bert asked if I’d mind him sleeping there, which I didn’t, so we made an agreement, and we ended up sharing the same bed. He said it was bigger than the small bunk bed beneath you we had slept in for two nights, so we just decided to share this one too. Nothing more than that”.

As I was done explaining to him, I could see the scepticism on Jepha’s face while he was constantly raising his left eyebrow.
“Oh”, he suddenly said, followed by a pause. “So you don’t know about -”.
He interrupted himself, no longer having eye contact with me.
“Know about what?”, I said, waiting for him to answer.
“No, never mind. Forget it”.
“No, tell me”, I commanded, setting my now empty glass in the kitchen sink.

“Well”, Jepha started, followed by yet another pause. “You see, here on the other day when we we’re drinking and smoking weed, you know, Bert kinda told me something after you’d gone to the bathroom”.
“Yeah…?”, I said, raising my eyebrows, waiting for him to continue.
“Well… He kinda told me that he thought you were awesome. Like, not that kind of nice friendly awesome, but really awesome”.
“Oh”, I said quietly, barely above a whisper.
“And you gotta take his word for it ‘cause when Bert’s wasted, he always tells the truth”.

I could feel myself becoming more and more dizzy as Jepha kept on talking, passing on Bert’s confession.
“I haven’t seen him having that look on his face for a long, long time”, he continued, taking a piece of the carrot he’d just taken out of the fridge.
“Yeah, I better go to bed”, I mumbled, fumbling with my fingers while I was looking down at the floor.
“Oh, okay. Good night, then”, he replied, seeing me leave the kitchen with a worried expression on my face.

All these thoughts were running through my head, making me even more dizzy than I already was. I needed to lie down, quickly.
As I climbed over Bert while climbing into the king-size bed, this time almost kneeing him in the stomach, I started to shiver.
“Hey, what’s up with all the traffic?”, he mumbled in his half-sleep.
“Nothing. Just the guys keeping me up”, I answered, pulling the covers over my head.
I couldn’t stop thinking of what Jepha had told me.
So as I lay there, shivering uncontrollable trying to get my mind on other things, I knew that this was going to be a long night.
