The Biggest Fan
Ice Cream.
”Thank you so much, Bert! I’ll pay you as soon as I can exchange my money into Dollars, I promise”, I said gratefully.
“Forget it. Hey, you can pay me back by letting me read the magazines”, he suggested with a smile.
As Bert was getting his change back from purchasing the magazines, the shop manager suddenly burst out:
“Do I know you from somewhere? I swear I’ve seen you before!”
“Well”, Bert started.
I could see he was blushing.
“I’m in a band. Maybe you’ve seen me in a magazine?”
“Yeah… Wait! You’re Bert McCracken from The Used, aren’t ya?”, the shop manager asked with an excited voice.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“Can I get your autograph?”
“Sure”, Bert said, grabbing the pen the shop manager handed him, before signing on a piece of paper.
“Thank you so much, man. You rock!”
“No problem”, he responded with a smile while taking the bag with the magazines.
“Have a nice day!”
“Yeah, you too. Come on, Lina, let’s go.”
“Hey, is she your girl friend?”, the shop manager asked, gazing at me with curious eyes.
“Nah, just a really good friend”, Bert smiled as we both walked out of the door.
“Hah, pretty weird, eyh? That he recognized me?”
“Yeah. He was nice, though”, I responded, ruffling my hair.
“So, what do you wanna do now?”
“I don’t know. What’s the time?”
“A quarter past 3 pm, so we still have plenty of time to kill before the sound check.”
“Oh, okay. Hmm, I don’t know what to do. You got any suggestions?”, I asked, looking at him.
“We could go by some ice cream or somethin´. I mean, if you wanna?”
“I feel so bad for using you money… Isn’t there anything else we could that doesn’t cost anything?”
“No, stop it. It’s the-”
“Yeah, it’s the least thing you can do. Why do you keep saying that?”, I asked, interrupting him.
I needed an answer.
“Well, it’s just that… You’ve done so much for me lately.”
“What? What have I done, besides sleeping in your bed, eating your food and using your money?.”
“No, it’s not like that! You’ve been an amazing support throughout this last week. Like, you cook food for us, you fold my clothes, you entertain us, I can talk to you, and… And you make me laugh.”
The way Bert said the last part made me feel warm inside.
He really didn’t see it like the way I did.
He was grateful for something I did, something I took for granted.
“So being able to give something back is really the least thing I can do”, he continued.
“I didn’t know you felt it that way”, I said shamefully.
I was feeling pretty rotten at that point.
“Well, now you do. So stop being such a stubborn ass and let me buy you stuff when I want to!”
That made me laugh. I was really stubborn.
“Okay. Then go buy me some ice cream!”, I commanded humoristically, making us both laugh.
It was nice being able to joke about this.
It was almost as if we had sorted things out.
“Will do!”, Bert responded. “There’s an ice cream stand over there. Wanna go?”
“Sure!”
“So, which flavor do you like?”, he asked as we got to the ice cream stand.
“Hmm, there’s so many to choose from. I really don’t know! I need some time to think.”
“Haha, me too.”
So there we were; the both of us standing in front of the ice cream stand, looking at all the different flavors.
There must have been at least 20 of them.
“Okay, I’ve made up my mind. I think.”
“Yeah? Which one?”
“Banana Split and Rocky Road-something.”
“Ah, awesome!”
“Hello, what will it be?”, the ice cream man asked.
“She’ll have two spoons of Banana Split and Rocky Road in a cup and… The same for me, please”, Bert said.
“Coming right up!”
“Do you like banana and chocolate too?”, I asked, looking at him.
“Yeah, they’re my favorites.”
I smiled at Bert as I got my cup of ice cream.
I was craving for it so much now.
The sun was shining, burning my pale skin, so the ice cream was almost soothing in the heat.
As Bert got his cup of ice cream too, we started walking down the street, just taking it slow.
Neither one of us said anything to each other.
We didn’t have to, either.
The little smiles we exchanged between every mouthful of ice cream were enough…

i wasn't planning on updating today, but i'm so happy right now. ;Dfirst of all; my baby brother's turning 5 today, so yay for him! (:
