Staring out the Window

Alice looked out the window intently as the clouds drifted across the darkening sky. It was supposed to start raining and any minute. Alice could feel it coming.

She had been waiting apprehensively at the sky hoping her prediction was wrong. There was nothing on the news about rain. Actually, it was supposed to be sunny out. It was sunny in the morning, but only the morning.

Alice's lips were dried and cracked. She stretched her lower lip to see if she could make it bleed. It did. Then she pursed her lips to make more blood come out. She licked her lips with her eyes still fixed on the sky.

The first couple of raindrops had fallen, then more. It was merely sprinkling for a few minutes. The sidewalks were spotted with the fallen rain. Slowly but surely the clouds let go of the rain it had been holding for what seemed like forever.

Alice knew it.
