Chapter 3: Behind the Brick Wall

"Jack!" called a rotund, balding man behind a counter. "Long time no see! What's the occasion? What can Paulie do fo' you, baby?"

Jack smiled. Paulie, who had been born in New York, came over to Ohio around twenty years ago, and still had a heavy New York accent.

"It's that time of the year, Paulie," Jack replied hesitantly. "I need the, you know, the stuff."

"It's that time already?" Paulie answered. He whistled long and high. "I didn't realize."

"Yeah, I know, time passes by pretty quick," Jack answered, trying to end the conversation. "But I'm in, you know, a bit of a hurry."

"Okay," Paulie said, "Just let me go get your 'stuff' from the back room." He disappeared behind a large curtain. When he reappeared a few minutes later he was holding a crimson velvet bag. "Here you go, Jack," he told him. "I'll see you laters."

"Thanks, Paulie," Jack smiled hesitantly. "I'll be bringing this back soon." A small bell tinkled as Jack stepped out of the shop into a dark alley. When he turned around there was a brick wall behind him.
