All The Lost Souls

Sammael

All I could think about when I got through my front door was how much I was craving a drink. I shrugged off my coat, simply letting it fall to the floor and flopped onto the couch, beer in hand. After a few swigs I couldn’t help but evaluate my current situation. I was completely alone in the world, totally bored with my life and slowly seeping into alcoholism. It definitely can’t get better.

My ringing cell phone pulled me out of my pessimism with a jolt. I spent almost a minute fumbling through discarded take-away boxes, beer bottles and random articles of clothing. I finally discovered my phone and the realization that I live like a pig. Strangely, the Caller ID was completely blank. Odd. “Hello?”

“Sammael, I have a job for you,” a strange voice said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

I didn’t quite know how to react to that, so I went with petty defiance. “How about you tell me who the hell you are and I’ll consider listening to you.”

“Names aren’t important at the present time,” it responded, and the whole “Zen-Master” approach really pissed me off. “As I said before I have a job for you, now hush up and listen. Assuming you go on a patrol tonight, which I’m sure you will, head to the docklands. There will be a drug transaction taking place there that you must stop. Don’t ask questions, just do what I say.” The line went dead.

I stared at the phone in disbelief; some random stranger had called me, given me orders like I was a child and hung up on me. Even I had to admit that was rude. I threw the phone onto the mattress and soon followed it, lying on my back and staring blankly at the ceiling. As much as I tried to keep a clear head, I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on.

Since when was the underground drug trade of Lethe any of my business? If they began running on all fours with red eyes and eating other people, then I’d feel obliged to step in, but other than that it wasn’t my problem.

But in the back of my head, I was wondering if this “drug bust” was the exciting new change of pace I’d been waiting for, even though it didn’t initially seem like decapitating humans seemed like much of a challenge compared to vampires. I continued my branching thought tree to considering the fact that humans could be playing a part in where the vampires were coming from, doubtful, but possible. Humans are known to be quite dim-witted. With all these thoughts flooding my head, it was a wonder that I managed to fall asleep for the day.

Short chapter, I know, but it's more of a filler than anything else.
