He Saved Me, Loved Me, Wanted Me

V.

“Make it go away!” I whined as Zina blew a fan on me.

“Oh dear…,” she sighed and tucked away a few loose strands of hair as I lay beside the toilet on the bathroom floor. “I’m so sorry; I didn’t think bacon would make you sick.”

“It’s just the smell,” I said, closing my eyes, relishing in the non-bacon scented air. She looked nervously at her watch, and then her face changed, almost like she was satisfied with the time.

“Do you think you’ll be okay while I make a call?”

“Yeah, go ahead,” I replied, taking the fan out of her hands. Another wave of nausea invaded my being. I shot up and emptied every last bit I had. “Ugh. If you keep making me sick, I’m not going to buy you a teddy bear,” I said to the bump in my stomach. Zina poked her head in and looked at me weird. “What?” I asked.

“Nothing, I’ll bring you some saltines.” Zina left. “Remember me telling you about that Ana girl…” Her voice trailed off. Clanging of cupboards was heard, and then quieted. “…told the fetus that if it kept making her sick, she’d never get it a teddy bear.” She told the person on the line with a laugh.

‘Thank you,’ I mouthed as I was handed the crackers. ‘Who is it?’ I mouthed again.

“Hold on a minute,” she said into the phone. “It’s Zack, I’m telling him that he needs to come here because you’re not feeling well and I’m nervous about leaving you by yourself.”

“No, Zina!” I said, my voice scratchy. “You need to go do this, I’ll be fine!”

She laughed and raised the phone to her ear. “She is saying she wants me to go. That she’ll be fine but she can barely lift her head without getting sick.” “Okay, hold on.” Zina looked at me. “Zack wants to talk to you.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Why me?”

She shrugged. I rolled my eyes and took the phone. “Hello?” I asked.

“Wow, you sound horrible.” Zina’s brother, Zack said. I laughed. His voice reminded me of so many things.

“Why thank you. I’ve only been vomiting bile for God knows how long.”

“A little over an hour!” Zina said.

“Zina?” Zack asked.

“Yes. Now what is it you wanted to talk to me about?”

“It’s okay, Zina can stay at her place and I’ll just see her there. Nothing to worry about. She seems that she likes you quite well,” he laughed, “And trust me, she knows all about this woman thing.”

“Yeah, I can tell.” I looked up at her and smiled, then back away. “She’s done too much for me; I didn’t deserve all this kindness. She‘s a saint.”

“Maybe you did something to deserve it.”

“I don’t know, but I’m going to hand the phone back to Zina.”

“Okay, take care. I guess I’ll meet you later in person.”

“Yup,” I said, now clearing my throat. “Bye, Zack.”

He paused for a moment. “Um, bye.”

I handed the phone over to Zina. “Hey, Zack, when you coming over?” She paused, and then took the phone from her ear. “He hung up!” she said, and laughed. “Maybe it was disconnected.

I laughed weakly. “How long until he gets here?”

“Depends on traffic. How are you feeling now?”

I shrugged, taking a cracker into my mouth and chewing. “Tired,” I said.

“Here, let me help you up so you can rest. I’ll bring you a bucket.”

Zina’s POV

I tried to clean dishes as quietly as possible so I wouldn’t wake up Ana. She’s just seemed so exhausted lately, she needs the sleep. Today Ayden is out with Jack, they’re going to his parent’s house to spend the day. After putting the last dish in the dishwasher, I heard a knock on the door. Must be Zack. I dried my hands and walked to the door.

“Hi, Zack,” I said after opening the door a little more so he could come in.

“Zina, I need to ask you something,” Zack said, coming in. I shut the door.

“What?”

“What’s Ana’s last name?” I raised an eyebrow at him.

“Why do you want to know her last name?”

“Zina-”

“Why?”

“Because. Remember me telling you about that girl Syn was dating?” I nodded, wondering where he was going with this. “I think that’s her.”

“I doubt it, Zack. From what I remember you telling me, that girl has really long hair, and this Ana’s hair isn’t all that long.” It was true; her hair barely reaches the middle of her back.

“Regardless, do you know her last name?”

“She never told me, I never asked.”

“Where is she?”

“Why are you so anxious to see her?”

“Because Brian is a complete mess. He just got back from Paris and Ana wasn’t there. The landlord said she moved out-”

“Paris?”

“Yeah.”

I looked up the stairs. “That’s where we met.” I paused. “What if it is her?”

“Then you are truly what Ana says you are. A saint.”

“She’s sleeping right now.”

“I’ll just wait until she wakes up then.” He took a seat in a kitchen chair and took out his phone. “Is this her?” he asked.
