The Beach House

The End.

The aching sensation burned a whole through my stomach, or so it seemed. And it didn’t help that there was an undeniable fiasco going on around me.

“Jamie, your mic is hooked up; we’re turning it once you enter the library scene okay?” Ricky Lavor explained whipping the droplets of sweat off his forehead. I nodded and continued to breathe through my noise,

I felt a hand pressing gently against my shoulder, looking up I smiled, “Hey Mike,” Michael Greg smile down at me, “Nervous?” I nodded and continued to stare at the red velvet curtain.

“You’ll do amazing,” Mike whispered patting my shoulder once more before retreating backstage. I shuddered and began to listen in on the chaos.

“Lorrie that’s my shirt!”

“I can’t find my shoes!”

“The mic isn’t working!”

I let the nerves sink in, I was born to do this. Shaking off the anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach I turned back around.

A girl with light blonde hair and dead brown eyes was hooking some wires together, “Um, excuse me, how much more?” the aging women looked up at me-clearly surprised.

“Oh-um shouldn’t be more then ten minutes.” I smiled and thanked her, great, ten full minutes.

--

The adrenalin pumped through my veins as I cried out to Mike, his new found body transformed. Running up to him and pressing my lips hard against his I could almost see the crowd cheering, hearing was no problem.

The curtain dropped and actors and actresses filled around us, “Okay people, curtain call-one by one Jamie your last, staring with you!” the ring sensation filled my ears.

I was on Broadway.

I was living my dream.

I was the lead, in one of the most classic Broadway productions there was; Beauty and the Beast.

Yet something wasn’t right.

I felt a hand rub down on my now curled brown hair, “You did great for a new comer,” Mike joked,

I rolled my eyes at him and waited beside him on left exit. “Please I rocked this!” Mike chuckled, “I remember my first production-ah I couldn’t stop smiling.”

I nodded and watched as partner by partner filed out. “Guess it’s our turn,” I mumbled.

Sure I could perform in front of thousands of people, but I couldn’t have them embrace me, it was almost too embarrassing.

I took a bow, or a ‘curtsey’ and waved out to the audience, although the faces where unclear by all the blinding lights one thing was for certain.

Someone had brought a neon green poster and was flailing it up into the air. My heart hand stopped,

“Hey James?” I looked to find a unsure face meet mine, “What are we going to do, when you go to college and stuff?” I shrugged and played with my food.

“Well, I’m not all too sure; we still have a month left right? Let’s just make it last okay?” Joe nodded and we ate our food in silence,

“You know James?” Joe said wrapping his arm around my shoulder as we left the restaurant, “hm?” I asked mumbling into his chest,

“When you become a famous Broadway star, I’m going to come to your first performance ever, and leave a poster that says ‘I have the hots for a Jade’” Joe smirked.

I rolled my eyes and bumped his hips against mine, “Gesh Jonas I’d love to see you try,” I replied.

I had to get off this stage.

--

Stuffing the last goodie I had received from the gift basket my mother left into my purse I said goodbye to the rest of the cast and crew,

They pleaded that I should stay and ‘party it up’ with them, where as I had to remind them I was under age. I was all good though, I’d never been the partying type.

Pushing the heavy backstage exit door open I entered the chilly winter New York air. I couldn’t help but smile; I’d always been a city girl.

Letting my red heels click against the gravel I let out a puff of hot air, it was frozen instantly. “Did you forget something?” The voice stopped me dead in my tracks.

I closed my eyes and slowly turned around.

Please tell me this is a dream,

Damn.

“No, I don’t think so.” I replied quietly, the still cold body moved forward, “Okay then, well this is for you.” I couldn’t help but let a small smile tug on the corners of my lips.

“I can’t believe you remember.” I giggled as I opened the now folded poster. He shrugged and wedged his hands deep into his pockets.

“Yeah, you know I don’t go back on those, they’re to powerful, and it’s opening night and everything.” I nodded and studied the messy pen man ship closely.

“Thanks.” That’s all I could possibly say, what else was there? Joe nodded and rocked on the heel of his shoe.

“Well, if that’s it then uh good day.” I nodded and watched him walk away. “Hey Joe?!” I called back, Joe spun around quickly raising his eyebrows.

“Well, it’s winter vacation and all, and after this production ends, my first semester will to, so I was wondering if-maybe you still have that position open?”

Joe scrunched his eyebrows up for a moment and looked down at his feet.

I advanced towards Joe, “You know the guitar tech one. I mean I miss Nick and Kevin and Frankie, and you and stuff.”

This was a bad idea.

Joe nodded and looked up at me, his eyes studying my face.

Suddenly a smirk appeared, backing away Joe chuckled.

“You start Monday.”

I looked at him confused, he cut me off,

“Monday, no questions asked Jade.”
