Fortuitous

I Knew

"Come here, babe."

Three words.
Shock through the body.
Shiver down the spine.
Only three words should cause that reaction.
But instead
I get three very different,
Very simple words.

They terrify me.

I licked my lips.
I pushed myself out of my chair.
He was lounging in his father's chair.
My hands were shaking.
I walked towards him.

He gave me a smile.
God, it was beautiful.
It was what made me fall for him
On the very first day.
He rubbed his palms on his jeans.
He drummed his fingertips on his thighs.
His gorgeous gray eyes looked at me expectantly.
I nodded once.
I sat down gingerly on his lap.
He leaned his cheek on my shoulder and looked up at me.
He pushed back my dark hair and took in my appearance.

"You're so beautiful, sweetness. Have I ever told you that?"

There was a family portrait of him, his father, and his mother.
They looked so different from the broken family they were now.
Divorced.
Dead.
Absent.
Abusive.

He looked so young in that portrait.
He looked so innocent
And harmless.

No one would know what he was like in real life.

"Yeah. You have."

He growled.
He grabbed my arm.
His cold fingers gripped my chin so I could look at him.
Adoration immediately turned
Into anger.

"Don't talk to me with that tone and look at me when I talk to you."

He scoffed once before he pushed me down.
The floor was viciously hard and cold.
His hand hit the back of my head
And my neck snapped forward.

I gripped it in pain.
I never made a sound.
I never did.
Crying made him angrier.

I was on the floor for a moment
Before his hand was back on my head.
He stroked my hair.
He touched my cheek.
He sighed once.

"I'm sorry.
I won't do it again.
You know I love you, right, sweetness?"

"Yeah, baby, I know."

I kissed his fingers.
I knew.
He always apologized.
After every
Single
Mistake.
