Diary of a Reluctant Ruler

Toast!

The next day I woke up early, anxious to have plenty of time to see Olly off. Mum waylaid me as I went downstairs to the breakfast room, wanting to talk about the next school semester.

“Your grandmother and I have been thinking,” she began.

Oh no. Warning lights flashing people!

*wakes up drearily* What’s going on?!

Grandma and Mum have been thinking!

Aargh!

“We think you should probably continue your schooling in Rous for the next year,” she said.

“Not go back to Keats?” I asked.

“No,”

“But…”

“All your friends will have headed off to various colleges, so it makes sense for you to start again somewhere else and it will be vastly more convenient to have you at the palace,” she sped up as she talked.

I stood a little flabbergasted, unsure of what to say.

“Of course, you don’t have to decide now,” she finished, “Just think about it.”

“Ok,” I stuttered.

Mum walked off into the breakfast room, and I followed on auto-pilot. I sat down between Olly and James, my head spinning. Start all over again? With a load of freaked-out people who have no idea how to react to me? I knew there wasn’t much question about it; ‘Think about it’ just meant ‘get used to it’.

“You alright hun?” Olly asked, through spoons of bran flakes.

“Y- no,” I answered.

“What’s up?”

“I’m not going back to Keats,” I said.

“Ah,” Olly answered, looking guilty.

“You knew?” I asked.

“Kinda. I pretty much guessed.”

“Oh.”

“Don’t worry, you’re sure to make new friends.”

“But I don’t want to make new friends, Olly,” I moaned.

“Morning blues much?” James asked.

“Shut up,” Olly said, punching him in the arm.

“Calm down,” James said, holding up his arms in surrender, his piece of toast hitting me in the face.

Incoming!

Aargh!

I burst out laughing as butter slid down my nose.

“Oh! Yikes, I’m sorry Phil,” James said, grabbing a napkin.

“It’s alright, don’t worry!” I babbled, giggling.

He dabbed pathetically at the butter in an attempt to remove it, the rejected piece of toast sitting dejectedly upside down on the table cloth. I laughed as he only succeeded in spreading the butter around my face.

“I’ll do it,” I said, taking the napkin away from him.

“Sorry,” he repeated, grimacing.

“Well, at least you cheered her up,” Olly said, moving the piece of toast.

“You certainly did that,” I laughed.

Felix was laughing at me from across the table, doubled up over his scrambled egg. I glared at him, trying to make him regret his joyous response to my suffering.

“What?” he asked, as he saw my look.

“You know exactly what, young man.”

“Maybe I do, maybe I don’t,” he replied.

“Grr, you little-” I began.

“Felix mate, how do you fancy going bowling today?” James interrupted.

I stared at him.

Does he have brain disease?

The toast must be poisoned.

Yikes! It’s all over my face!!

“Yeah!” Felix replied, a great big grin across his face.

“Aren’t you going home today?” I asked confused.

“No,” James said, looking confused.

“But-”

“Mum, Dad and I are going, James is staying,” Olly said, “Didn’t you know that?”

“No, I didn’t. Why are you staying?” I asked dumbly.

“Because I’m going to University in Rous,” he stated.

“Since when?” I asked.

“Since forever,” James said, looking casual.

“Oh,” I said, wondering why I was always the last to know everything.

“Can we go to the cinema too?” Felix asked enthusiastically.

“Well, I dunno about that, we’ll have to see,” James answered, grinning back.

Definitely brain damaged.

“See you later Phil,” James said, “Bye Olls.”

“See you,” Olly said, giving James a quick hug.

Felix jumped up and followed him out, babbling about a film trailer he’d seen the other day.

“Why am I always the last to know everything?”

“I thought you knew,” Olly said.

“Well, obviously not.”

“Failure to communicate, sorry.”

“S’ok,” I replied.

“You going to see us off?”

“Definitely,” I answered.

Realising that I hadn’t yet eaten anything, I took a piece of toast and buttered it quickly, chasing after Olly, Jeff and Lily and my parents. I bolted it down, which made me hiccup as I hugged Olly goodbye. I reaffirmed my promise to write to her, and waved as they disappeared through the iron gates.

One week of summer left…
