Larkin Blanche is a 17-year-old girl who used to love life, until her parents were lost in the Atlantic on a cruise and her life become a spiral of sadness and grief. At the beginning of her senior year she meets Luke Canary, a handsome "cowboy" with an addiction to love poems. Larkin finds herself madly in love with Luke by the end of the year, so when he tells her he'll be leaving to go to the Army she's devastated.
