Ironing Perler Beads
Perler beads can provide hours of fun for kids and teens alike. With a few colorful beads, a peg board, and a hot iron, you can make all kinds of shapes and creations. For those of you who don't know how to work with these beads, here's a few easy guidelines to help you along the way.
Step 1
Buy Perler (fuse) beads and peg boards online or at your local craft store. (Available at the Perler Beads, Michael's, Patcatan's, Kmart, and Joann fabrics, among others.)
Step 2
Preheat iron.*
Step 3
Choose desired peg board (which come in many shapes such as circles, hexagons, and squares) and place on a flat surface. (The flat surfaces is crucial, it helps the loose beads from falling off or moving.
Step 4
Using a premade designs (available on the internet, at the Perler Beads website, and in Perler Bead books) or one you created, place beads on the peg board in desired pattern.
Step 5
Place the ironing paper (parchment and wax are usable substitutes in the case that the original ironing paper is lost or torn) on top of the design. Iron evenly for around ten seconds.
Step 6
Once you're sure that the side of the design is completely fused together, copy the same action on the other side. (Warning: The design may still be hot. Wait until it cools before touching or moving it, so that you don't harm yourself. The paper will be removed much easier once the beads are cool.)
Step 7
Once done, removed the design from the paper carefully and enjoy.
*Ironing should be done by adults. Keep children at a safe distance.
**If not handled carefully finished designs can break, so be gentle!
