DIY Canvas Poster

Whether you're heading off to university, updating your bedroom, or moving into a new apartment, this easy to personalize canvas art is the prefect way to make yourself more at home.

What You'll Need

  • 2 cans of spray paint in different colors
  • one canvas board (whichever size your comfortable with)
  • one pack of repositional letter stickers (whichever size will fit your canvas better)

Cost:

  • Spray paint: less than $4 per can at Walmart
  • Canvas board (11"x14"): two-pack for less than $5 at Michaels
  • Repositional Letters (3"): less than $4 at Michaels

Total Cost: less than $8 per completed poster, with lots of spray paint remaining and repositional letters you can use again and again.

What You'll Need to Do:

If possible do your spray painting outside on a dry, not-too-windy day. If you must do this indoors, be sure to open all windows/doors and cover all surfaces that risk exposure to paint.

1. Choose which color you'd like to use for your letters. Spray that color evenly over your canvas board. Allow the layer of paint to dry completely. [1]
I waited two hours, the can's suggested dry time.

2. Using masking tape (or 'weak' painter's tape) create even lines where you want the bottom of your letters to rest. If you'd like to add an image, be sure to leave space for that as well. [2]
Starting at the top, I placed a tape every four inches. This allowed an inch of space between each letter and the line above it.

3. Place your letters on the board. Be sure to press down the edges; you'll be spray painting over the canvas again and you don't want the color to bleed underneath your letters. Remove your masking tape. [3]

4. Spray your second color (this will be your background color) evenly across the canvas. Be sure that all the canvas (even the sides and the letters) are evenly coated.

5. Wait for the paint to dry to the touch.
For me, this took about twenty minutes.

6. Gently peel off the letters. If you'd like to save your letters for another project, just stick them on a semi-glossy surface; this will allow them to be easily peeled off for later use. [4]
I placed the used letters on the top of a wardrobe for safe-keeping.

8. Allow the paint to completely dry. [5]

9. You're done! Now you can hang your painting and move on to another.

Notes:

  • I added a little deer emblem I found on sale for $00.25. I simply spray painted it silver, allowed it to dry, then stuck it to the painted canvas with Krazy glue (any extra stretch glue should work).
  • The first coat of paint doesn't need to be too even or neat, since you'll be covering it with a different color.
  • If you're in an enclosed space, do use a face mask to lessen the amount of paint you'll inhale. Silver snot may seem cool but it's really not.
