How to Make a Drawstring Bag

Step One:

Select the fabric of your choice and fold it in half. Make sure the fabric is flattened on the surface and folded bad sides out.

Step Two:

Get a ruler (or other straight edge) and Crayola marker (or chalk) and mark the fabric to the desired length. I recommend that the length of the back be 2/3 - 3/4 of the height.

Step Three:

Real simple, cut it out.

Step Four:

Leave the pieces alone and cut out a smaller piece of fabric or felt in a rectangle. For every inch wide, make sure it is 5 inches long.

Step Five:

Cut the smaller piece in half so you're left with two 2.5 inch pieces. Proceed to fold these in half and pin them together so you have 2 doubles over 1.25 inch pieces.

Step Six:

(Optional) Sew the ends of the smaller pieces so you have 2 loops.

Step Seven:

Take both of the larger pieces and fold over an inch of fabric and pin it down (An inch of the good side should be shown on the bad side) on all 4 sides.

Step Eight:

Sew one of the larger pieces.

Step Nine:

With the other un-sewn larger piece, pin the two smaller pieces 1/2 inch from the bottom one the good sides, ends facing toward the edges of the fabric.

Step Ten:

Sew it.

Step Eleven:

Fold the tops of the large pieces over 2 inches (so you'll see 2 inches of good side on the bad side) and pin it.

Step Twelve:

Sew the two pieces together now on all sides EXCEPT the top two inches of the bag and the top.

Step Thirteen:

Turn the bag inside out and make sure all the seams hold nicely. Make sure the two smaller pieces are facing out making two loops, then lay the bag on a flat surface.

Step Fourteen:

(Skip to Sixteen if using cording) Measure the yarn for the cording by going around the whole boarder of the bag. Then proceed to cut six more of these.

Step Fifteen:

Divide the six strings into two groups of three, tie at the top, and braid.

Step Sixteen:

Thread the cording through the loops at the bottom and the fabric loop at the top. The cording will be long enough to go back through the other side and the ends will meet at the bottom loops. Tie them together.

Step Seventeen:

Enjoy!!
