Getting Chemical-Free Color Hair Streaks

Step 1: Gather Materials

  • bowl or cup of water
  • brush or comb
  • hair holding spray
  • white chalk
  • colored chalk
  • paper towel or bath towel
  • mirror (optional)
  • blow-dryer (optional)
  • curling iron or flat iron (opitonal)
  • hair shine/protection spary or serum (optional)
  • spray bottle (optional)

Step 2: Select Colors

First select the chalk colors you'd like to have as colored streaks. There are all kinds of chalk brands and types, choose any. I like the big thick side walk chalk cause it's easy to grip.

NOTE: If you have light or blond hair, the colors will show up very bright so you may want to choose darker colors like purples and blues. For those with darker hair, brighter colors will show up more vibrantly like yellow and pink.

If your hair is black or very dark brown you'll want to select your desired color AND also select a plain white chalk.

Step 3: Prep Hair and Chalk

(This step is optional if you have light colored hair.)

It's best to have your hair styled before you continue on. After the chalk has set, you don't want to brush or mess with it too much.

Separate the strands of hair you'd like to color and pull back the rest with a hair tie.

Set your chalk in a cup or bowl of water for 30 seconds -give or take depending on the thickness of the chalk, you want it to get a little bit soft but not crumble under pressure - then remove it and set it on a towel.

Step 4: Almost Ready to Color

Place a towel over your shoulders to keep the color from dripping onto your clothes.

Taking a small group of hair, wet the strands with the spray bottle - and then spray it with the hair protection or shine serum (optional).

Run your comb or brush through the strand to remove tangles and pull it straight.

Grip the end of the strands with one hand and pull it out and away from your head so the strands are taut.

Step 5: Now We Color!

If you have dark hair: Follow step 5 with the white chalk first then repeat with colored chalk. You'll need to coat your hair with the white chalk first to help the color show up better (like bleaching dark hair before coloring it so the color is more vibrant).

Run the chalk from root to ends, holding the chalk so the side runs along the hair. Do not rub the chalk up and down your hair - this will cause your hair to tangle and frizz.

Be sure to coat the hair well. If available, use a mirror so you can track your progress. If need, wet more.

NOTE: Color may appear different on different shades of hair. Also, the color will become a lighter shade once dry.

Step 6: Ways to Dry and Style

After you've colored your hair, you're ready to style.

There's a few option to styling the chalk-colored hair:

Option A: Use a curling iron to curl the colored hair. The heat will help set the chalk and keep it from rubbing out easily. You may want to spray it with some hair spray for extra insurance.

Option B: Straighten it with a straightening iron. Again, the heat will help lock in the color and keep it from rubbing off easily. Spray with hair spray for extra hold.

Option C: Blow dry the colored hair with medium to high heat. The heat helps lock in the color. If you want, spray with hair spray to help keep the color.

Option D: Mist the colored hair with a little hair spray and let it air dry. Since this option doesn't apply heart, the hair will lose its color the quickest.

Step 7: Finish

Put away your supplies and you're done.

And that's how you get cool chemical-free temporary hair color streaks.

All colors will appear brighter or more obvious in the sun. How long it lasts will vary each time, depending on how much you mess with your hair and how active you are. Color may rub off on clothing if it's in constant contact with it. Color will run and wash out if your hair gets wet.
