DIY Sea Salt Spray

A beauty trend that has been popular for quite some time is the beachy wave look, and I particularly love this style because it’s really easy and works well with my hair’s natural texture. There are numerous products on the market that are meant to enhance texture and create that beachy wave look, but if you’re living on a budget, it can be hard to buy a ton of hair products only to find that they don’t give you the desired effect. This tutorial is a recipe for a quick, easy, and inexpensive sea salt spray that can help give you that effortlessly sexy “spent the day at the beach” look that embodies the summer.

The only things you need are sea salt (not table salt), hot water, and a plastic spray bottle.

Step One

Boil one cup of water, then add two teaspoons of sea salt to the boiling water. Stir the sea salt until it dissolves. This ratio can easily be halved or doubled, depending on the size of your spray bottle. Since my bottle is pretty huge and I use sea salt spray a lot, I tend to use two cups of water and four teaspoons of sea salt.

Step Two

Once the water has cooled, pour it into the spray bottle.

Step Three

Mist the sea salt spray onto your locks. This generally works best on damp hair because then you can let your hair air-dry completely to get more texture, but if you only want a slightly textured look, you can spray this solution onto dry hair and scrunch your strands to get the amount of texture you want.

Step Four (Optional)

If you’d like more hold, you can use a spray gel or hairspray to complete the look. I use Garnier Fructis's Wonder Waves spray gel. Most sea salt sprays that are available in stores have a spray gel mixed in, but I’ve found that there’s often too much gel, so store-bought sea salt sprays can make my hair look too crunchy. By using the sea salt spray and spray gel separate, you can get the texture while being able to control how much hold you want.
