How to Transform an Old T-Shirt

Chances are, you've got a few old t-shirts sitting in your closet or in your dresser. Rather than let them gather dust, why not give them a second life? For this tutorial, you'll want to practice on a t-shirt you don't mind destroying, just in case something goes wrong or you decide you don't like the way the t-shirt looks.

Step One

Lay the t-shirt you'll be working on out on a smooth, flat surface. Make sure there are no wrinkles in the shirt. Take a pair of scissors and cut the sleeves off at the seams. You can throw the scraps away or keep them, whatever you'd like.

Step Two

Starting at the top, use the scissors to cut down one side of the t-shirt. Try not to cut through the bottom hem, although it shouldn't hurt if you decide to. Repeat on the other side of the t-shirt.

Step Three

On one side of the t-shirt, cut slits in the fabric, making sure to keep them evenly spaced. Repeat this on the opposite side of the t-shirt. The length of the slits depends on how you'd like the finished product to fit you. If you'd like a looser shirt, make the slits shorter. For a more tight-fitting shirt, cut longer slits.

Step Four

Beginning at the top of the shirt, take the first two strips of fabric and tie them together. Continue this all the way down, and on the opposite side of the t-shirt. This will create a tassled effect.

Step Five

Put on the t-shirt and make any adjustments.

Voila!

Once you're happy with the way your shirt looks, your finished! You've now transformed an old shirt into something cute and fashionable. Wear it on it's own or over a tank top to give it a layered look.
