Messy Bedhead

The just-rolled-out-of-bed look has been fairly popular, and while I adore this effortlessly cool style, it’s also pretty easy to go overboard. People tend to make the mistake of adding too much product or over-styling their hair to the point where the style loses its effortlessness. The key to achieving the messy bedhead look is working with the natural texture of your hair and keeping the product use and teasing to a minimum.

To get this look, all you really need is a texturizing or sea salt spray.

Step One

It’s best if you go through these steps the night before you plan on rocking this look. Letting your hair partially air dry and set overnight lessens the need for products and styling. Starting with damp hair, mist a texturizing spray evenly throughout the hair.

Step Two

Quickly run a blow-dryer through your locks, focusing mainly on the roots while running your hands through the ends. It’s crucial that you manage to get your roots relatively dry while keeping the ends a bit damp. I’ve also found that flipping my head over to get the roots at the nape of my neck helps give my hair a bit more volume and I can dry the ends a bit while tousling.

Step Three

After drying and while your ends are still slightly damp, throw your hair up into a loose bun and sleep with it like this overnight.

Step Four

In the morning, carefully undo the bun and shake locks loose. Flipping your head over, add a small amount of mousse and scrunch your ends with your fingers. You’ll really have to experiment to find the right amount of mousse that will give you the right amount of hold without making your hair look crunchy. My hair’s relatively long, so I use about a palm-sized dollop of mousse, but I also keep the mousse more concentrated towards the roots at the nape of my neck and the ends so that it’s less visible.

Step Five

Lightly brush the roots to smooth them out. If the body and ends of your hair are looking a little crazy, brush them out gently with your fingers. Once you get the desired look, seal it with a mist of hairspray.
