Sock Bun

Buns are a perfect and easy hairstyle for when you want to keep your hair out of your face, and while the techniques and variations of the bun are practically endless, using a sock to help form the bun gives it a more polished and put-together look and keeps loose strands from slipping out.

For this bun, you’ll need an old sock, scissors, and a hair elastic. Anklet socks and thin socks are really hard to use for this bun, so if you can find some plain old socks (I snagged a holey sock from my older brother), it works a lot better.

  1. To make the sock for the bun, cut the toes off of an old sock and roll the sock so that it forms a doughnut. The sock acts in the same way that those mesh bun doughnuts you can find in the store do, with the exception that most people have at least one old sock lying around the house, so you don’t have to go to the store and shell out money to buy it.
  2. Gather your hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with a hair elastic.
  3. Ease the rolled up sock onto the end of your ponytail. As you roll the sock down the length of the ponytail, tuck the ponytail into the base of the sock to form a bun.
  4. Finish off with some hairspray, and you’re good to go.

For a little something extra, you could also add braids to the bun. One way of adding braid is to wrap them around the base of the bun by leaving a couple of sections of hair out when you make the bun, braiding these sections, wrapping them around the base of the bun, and securing them with bobby pins.

Another cute look involves braiding sections of hair once you have it pulled into a ponytail, tying the braids off with small, clear elastics, and tucking the braids in along with the rest of the ponytail as you roll the sock down.
