DIYers: Scarf Bar

Winter is here - well, it's been here - and that means it's the season for scarves. With the holiday's just over, winter sales galore, and the recent snow (depending on wear you live), you've accumulated quite a few. And if you're like me, you've got more scarves than you know what to do with.

If you have a lot of coats, you're probably all set on where to store your scarves (easy solution: wrap them around the neck of your coat hangers). If you don't, and you're not too keen on giving up any drawer space, try this simple (cheap, quick and easy) DIY project: The Scarf Bar.

What You'll Need

  • 1 rail/bar - I used the silver 39-inch BYGEL rail from Ikea (it comes in two sizes - 22 inch for $2.99 and 39 inch for $3.99)
  • 12 shower hooks* - I used the clear, plastic Ringsjon shower curtain rings from Ikea (12 for $1.29). They have a circular shape (perfect for looping your scarves through) and a small opening on the side (which allows it to 'click' easily onto the railing).
  • 4 screws
  • 1 screw driver
  • 1 friend - to help hold the rail still while you screw it onto the wall

* You'll need on shower hook per scarf, so buy accordingly.

What You'll Do

This is pretty simple.

  1. Find a nice space on your wall to place your rail.
  2. Pick the height at which you'd like to place your rail.
  3. Have your friend hold the rail level while you screw it onto the wall. (If you don't have a drill, you can use a thumb-nail to prick a small hole where you want to put the screw in. This allows you to easily drill the screw in using a screw driver. Since the rail is pretty light, the hooks are light, and the scarves are light, you DO NOT have to screw this into one of your wall's studs. It'll hold without it.)
  4. With your rail installed, all that's left to do is hang up your scarves.
