Female Empowering Costumes

Do you ever find yourself wondering if there are any empowering costumes for women that won't have you walking down the street half naked? Have you ever wanted to look both sassy and smart in a costume? Well, you have come to the right place! Below I have detailed a few costume ideas that meet all of these requirements and that will make you look great!

Rosie the Riveter

She's one of the most important icons of the feminist movement, so of course we had to include her in this list. Not only is it an original idea (I personally haven't seen anyone in a costume party wearing this), but it's also very simple to accomplish. All you need is a denim shirt and a red scarf/bandanna. Here is a video tutorial on how to imitate her hairdo. As for the makeup, some red lipstick would match well, but you could totally rock it without any makeup at all.

Athena

Athena is the goddess of wisdom, courage, justice, civilization, strength, strategy, crafts, skills and many, many other things. On top of it all, she didn't need a man. She was a virgin and she totally owned it. (I know she wasn't real, but let's just go with that.) Here is a nifty tutorial on how to make a no-sew robe. You could add gladiator sandals and a golden headband across your forehead. If you want people to really recognize the specific goddess you are dressed up as, you should wear a helmet, spear or shield.

Frida Kahlo

Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter not only known for her works. Her views on life inspired many posterior feminists. She defended women's equality and important, although not this literally. One of her most reocgnizable traits was her monobrow. To dress up like her, it is absolutely necessary to connect your two eyebrows to form one. This will make you instanly recognizable as Frida. As for the clothing, bright colors are important. You could wear a simple maxi skirt and top, but add a colorful shawl and different necklaces in varied colors. Also important is Frida's signature flowers on the head. You'll nead to part your hair down the middle, make a braid updo and attach the flowers. If you're daring enough, you could even use the same makeup you used to connect your eyebrows to create a slight moustache shadow, which is another thing she's known for.

Construction Worker

Why don't you break a gender roll and dress up as a construction worker? All you really need is a hard helmet, a tool belt and a plaid shirt. Simple and effective.
