How to Potty Train a Puppy

It’s no secret that puppies are adorable. They can be a great addition to your family and a life-long friend, but they are hard to train. Puppies are like babies, you have to start from scratch when teaching them, and any parent will tell you that potty training is one of the hardest things to teach. Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll have your new puppy trained in no time.

Have a Designated Area

Your puppy needs to know exactly where it is allowed to go to the bathroom and where it isn’t. Have a designated spot in your yard that you take him to each time so that he knows exactly where to go. Make sure he knows that this is the place and time to do his business, not play.

Stick to a Schedule

Having a routine feeding schedule will keep your puppy on a regular bathroom schedule, which will help with the training process. If you know when your puppy is likely to go, you can be sure to take him out at that time.

Praise Not Punishment

You wouldn’t yell at your baby for using its diaper, so don’t scold your puppy for its accidents, either. Your puppy is just learning, so it will make mistakes. It’s important to praise your puppy when it does well, just as you would a child. Never hit your puppy!

Remember, the key to house training is preventing mistakes and rewarding success.
