How to Make Sugar Cookies (And Frosting!)

Ingredients for step one:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 scant teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or just a pinch)
  •

Ingredients for step two:

  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Take a large mixing bowl, and mix together all of the ingredients in step one.
In a separate, smaller bowl, mix together step two, and then add it to the first mixture. You should now have your cookie dough. If it's too sticky, mix in a bit more flour, but not too much, because you're about to roll out your dough.

Make sure your counter is clean and dry, then sprinkle flour over it. You'll need enough to roll out your dough without getting it stuck to the counter, but not so much that it's too thick a layer.

Put some flour on your hands, then press your dough into a ball. Put it on the floured area of the counter and roll it out with a rolling pin. You'll probably need to sprinkle flour over the top of the dough so it doesn't stick to the rolling pin. Try not to roll it out too thick or too thin. Remember, they'll get a bit bigger as they bake.

Using cookie cutters (or the open end of a cup if you lack cookie cutters,) press shapes into your dough, then arrange them on a lightly greased cookie sheet. (I use a non-stick spray to grease mine.) Make sure they aren't too close - You don't want them sticking together. Put about 1/2 inch - 1 inch between them.

Bake them in the oven for 7 - 10 minutes. If you're not sure how to tell when they're done, use a toothpick or a fork to poke through them. If it comes out with dough, then they need to bake longer. If it comes out clean, they're done.

Ingredients for Frosting

  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 4 teaspoons milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2-3 drops food coloring - if desired

Combine sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Add food coloring.
Make sure to wait until the cookies are cooled to frost them.

If you want to add sprinkes, make sure to do so right after applying the frosting.

Enjoy your cookies!
