Writing Ethnically Diverse Characters - Comments

I do my best to include various characters from all different races. Do you have any advice in describing appearances? I don't want any of my descriptions to come off as just describing skin color and such. Like, how do I get the reader to understand that I'm writing about an African American or an Asian without being blunt about it?
