Inigo Montoya's right.

Try this.

A vegetarian eats vegetation (well, that makes more sense than the root meaning just vegetables). A pollotarian eats poultry. A pescetarian eats fish. The last two are semi-vegetarian diets, but if you eat any sort of meat, fish, or poultry, you're not technically a vegetarian.

For those who require a small amount of meat or fish for health reasons or because of their parents, I'd consider you vegatarian, but if you don't try your best to avoid all meat, fish, and poultry, i.e. you eat chicken regularly, you're not a vegetarian.

They are still vegetarian, though, whether or not they are 'semi-vegetarian' or not.

The 'vege' in 'vegetarian actually isn't to refer 'vegetation' or 'vegetables', but the prefix 'vege' in both words means 'alert' or 'quick'.

wikipedia:

The word "vegetable" is still sometimes used as an archaic literary term for any plant: vegetable matter, vegetable kingdom. The word comes from the Latin vegetabilis (animated) and from vegetare (enliven), which is derived from vegetus (active), in reference to the process of a plant growing. This in turn derives from the Proto-Indo-European base *weg- or *wog-, which is also the source of the English wake, meaning "become (or stay) alert".

I know that's based on 'vegetable', but the 'vege' is still the same in both words.

wikipedia:

The first Vegetarian Society founded in 1847 claims to have "created the word vegetarian from the Latin 'vegetus' meaning 'lively' (which is how these early vegetarians claimed their diet made them feel) ..." However, the Oxford English Dictionary and other standard dictionaries state that the word was formed from the term "vegetable" and the suffix "-arian" [...] But it also notes that "The general use of the word appears to have been largely due to the formation of the Vegetarian Society at Ramsgate in 1847."

The word was originally meant to express how it made the dieters feel, basically, until others began to insist that the other one is what it meant.

I used to have a book [actually my first] about vegetarianism that I received as a gift when I first became vegetarian.

But those meanings are archaic. There's lotsof other ways to feel lively and alert. Coffee does it for me.

Vegetarians don't eat meat.

dictionary.com:
meat
–noun
1.the flesh of animals as used for food.

meat

noun
1. the flesh of animals (including fishes and birds and snails) used as food

meat [miːt] noun
the flesh of animals or birds used as food

Yeah, those are semi vegetarian diets, but everything is a semi vegetarian diet unless you eat purely meat and no plant matter at all. They may be semi-vegetarian diets, but those who follow them are not vegetarians.

-headdesk- I didn't finish my sentence. Shifty

I had a book that had a lot of information on the archaeic meaning and the history of vegetarianism, but I can't find it to quote and source it.

But don't you go vegan. They're the last or second to last from the list of long livers.
So they don't really live that much.

And how do you know that?

Wikipedia darling. File

A 1999 metastudy[6] compared six major studies from western countries. The study found that the mortality ratio was the lowest in fish eaters (0.82) followed by vegetarians (0.84) and occasional meat eaters (0.84), and was then followed by regular meat eaters (1.0) and vegan (1.0)[68] . When the study made its best estimate of mortality ratio with confounding factors considered, the mortality ratio for vegetarians was found to be (0.94)[69].

Don't believe me, look for " vegetarian" and scroll down till you find "Longevity" File

Oh yeah and I wanted to say it seems today nothing is..trustable. File

Wikipedia:

Concerns of vegetarians and vegans

The sugar refining industry often uses bone char (calcinated animal bones) for decolorizing.[14][15] This may concern some vegans and vegetarians; about a quarter of the sugar in the U.S. gets processed using bone char as a filter and the rest gets processed with activated carbon. As bone char does not get into the sugar, the relevant authorities consider sugar processed this way as parve/kosher.[15]

Vegetarians and vegans may also object to the impact that the burning of the cane fields (a common part of the harvesting practice) has on insects, rats, snakes, and other life residing in the fields.[16]

Perfect. Now I can't even eat candy and other sugar crap. Thank you, you cruel fucking candy factors. Neutral

You do know that anyone can go in and edit wikipedia? So maybe you shouldn't get all your sources about vegetarianism there.

The definition of vegetarian states:

veg·e·tar·i·an Audio Help /ˌvɛdʒɪˈtɛəriən/ [vej-i-tair-ee-uhn]
1.a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.

Therefor, no, you wouldn't have to eat purely vegetables to be a vegetarian.

I think there are a lot of definitions bout vegetarians.. but don't forget, there are also different types.

1) Ovo-lacto vegetarian
2) Ovo- vegetarian: they don't eat milk products (and meat of course) but eggs
3) Lacto-Vegetarian: they eat milk but no eggs
4) vegan: they don't eat any animal products
5) Frutarian: they just eat herbal products
6) Pesci-Vegetarian: they don't eat meat from birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals but they do eat fish and meat from invertebrates

I don't know if these names are correct in english but some of them are latin anways.
These are the definitions I have learnt at school for my final project, so I came to the conclusion there isn't ONE type of real vegetarian.

There's also Raw Vegans, who eat very little to no processed foods, and I would also like to say that the Fruititarian can have negative effects if you use it as a long term or permanent diet. It is meant to last about a month to wash toxins out of your system and is not healthy if it lasts much longer than that.

I was just saying according to her definition of it. I don't think everyone is a semi vegetarian unless they eat purely meat.

Well I'm not really allowed to have chocolate anyway, but I guess it won't be too good if you are used to eating it.
Think of it as being healthy. XD
