| druscilla; liddell. Ghostwriter Age: 21 Gender: Female Posts: 17772 | I illegally download songs. Since I downloaded Firefox a few months ago I have downloaded songs to date. Right now I don't have a job, so I can't afford to download them from iTunes, which is what I used to do. My point of view is that I'll buy an actual album if I want it. But for just one song, I'm not going to buy an entire album. I'll be broke when Pretty. Odd. comes out, but as soon as I have the money I plan to invest $50+ on the deluxe edition of it. On that subject, Ryan Ross is quoted in Kerrang as saying about fans illegally downloading the new album: "If that was the only way someone as going to get to hear our music I'd rather them do it that way than not at all." I also download songs that can't be bought. Demo version, live versions, acoustic covers, etc. - - - Your thoughts? |
| shotgun opera Fanfic Fanatic Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 1755 | I occasionally download songs illegally. But when I do, it's so I know what to expect from the album. I do feel bad knowing I'm stealing from people who've put a lot of effort into creating something. |
| mad as a rabbit Journalist Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 507 | 14 DAYS! I quted Ross on the matter when my friend was lecturing me about downloading the alternate versions that came out in Australia. Maybe it wasn't fair of him to say that because he obviously wasn't the only one involved in the making of Pretty. Odd but it was quite nicely put. I approve of people who download music for their personal listening pleasure (without redistributing it), but of course I encourage purchasing CDs from time to time. |
| emILY. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 1837 | I usually get albums from the library rather than downloading. Sometimes I'll download if I don't have enough money for the album at that point in time, or if I have no intention of buying the album. But, if I like the music enough, I'll go get a hard copy eventually. |
| empress.of.dirt Writer's Block Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 51 | I usually only buy the album when it's a band I like and have listened to more than just they're singles. If I only know one or two songs or I don't know what they sound like, THEN,I illegally download. (Only to see if they're worth buying the cd of) |
| the endless. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 2601 | Like someone else said, I usually get albums from the library, which is technically illegal. I very rarely buy music nowadays, but yesterday I ripped a couple of songs off of YouTube videos - Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' and Panic at the Disco's 'Nine in the Afternoon', though I intend to buy Pretty. Odd. when it comes out. I rather dislike DRM, and one of the reasons I ripped those songs instead of buying off of iTunes is because iTunes has all these restrictions on how many CDs you can burn the music too, etc., and I think that once you buy the music you should be able to do whatever you want with it. Plus, iTunes automatically takes 70% of the purchase for themselves, so it's really not that much better an alternative. But as long as I can afford to buy CDs [I prefer physical CDs] I am going to pay for anything that comes from my favorite bands because I don't want to rip them off. |
| andILY. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 2952 | I always buy CDs from smaller underground bands. Same goes for movies. I have friends in ''the indie movie industry'' and I know how hard they work and how badly they are paid. But there are also the ''big bands'' and the big studios, I don't usually buy albums from people who can afford private jets. Most of the times buying an actual CD is just a form of respect, just a thank you to the artist that you love. However, I think that art is there to be shared. Music is there to be listened and movies are there to be seen the same way paintings or photographs are too. And if I'm ever to produce a work of art I'll let everyone download it. I'm not sure if I'll buy Pretty.Odd. it all depends on the album art. I can actually afford it, but still I'd rather buy 2 books than one CD full of songs that I already know. |
| Fentoozler Ink Slinger Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 956 | I don't know if they're actually going to do this or if they have yet or if it's still in the works. But they're apparently adding another 5 dollars to everyone's Internet bills, specifically for downloading songs and then giving all those 5 dollars to the music guild. Which in the end, makes downloading songs legal. I download but I have Limewire Pro. So, I guess I technically paid for it? But I don't download whole albums. I prefer having the CD. |
| The Lovecraft Cliché Catastrophe Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 476 | It's true that I feel a little bit ashamed whenever I download something - but besides the money issue(foreign CDs are very expensive here), I can't find 90% of the bands I love in the stores around me. What am I supposed to do? Not listen to any music at all? Plus, I wanna know a bit about a band before spending my money for a month on a CD. And also, underground bands that don't sell albums around me... I'm sorry. I don't think we're the big criminals here. I consider those who pirate things and then sell them on the black market are the ones that are really bad. Besides, as a way to make ourselves feel better, think that producers and managers get the most from albums, artists are paid through concerts. |
| Fallen From Grace Student Shakespeare Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 7766 | I only download songs for free when I cannot find them anywhere else [aka iTunes]. I don't use illegal dowload sites though, I just use file converters. I'm against using illegal downloads generally, and I've never used one of those sites. I think if the bands and the music companies are putting effort into producing this music you should have the decency to pay. I understand that a lot of people don't have the money to buy all these songs legally, but if you were to go to a shop and shoplift because you didn't have cash it would be considered wrong, and I don't see how this is different. |
| mad as a rabbit Journalist Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 507 | Lovesick.: I agree. The underground film scene is underrated and deserves all the support it can get. and ![]() oh come on you know you want it books are lovely, though but I mean just look at it ;( |
| the endless. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 2601 | Fentoozler: Where is this law being proposed? It seems really unfair to me . . . I know plenty of people who have internet but don't download songs . . . And five dollars hardly makes up for the loss from all the songs people would be downloading, considering one internet connection could used by multiple people. I would still buy music, so it would be unfair to people to ask them to pay even more. |
| Mrs. Melting Crayons Banned Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 4803 | I illegally rip most of my songs from myspace, youtube, etc. I don't own Limewire. I think it's fine. I only pay for it if I think the band deserves the money, and I'll only consistently legally download four bands. |
| Toro_Sex Amateur Author Age: 20 Gender: Female Posts: 106 | I illigally download to try out stuff. I'm not going to invest my money in something I am just going to buy and never listen to cause I don't like it. I use to have limewire, but my hardrive went bad so I am hesistant on redownloading it cause I just got rid of all the spyware it gave me. |
| Fentoozler Ink Slinger Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 956 | care bear stare.: It's not a law and it was on the news, both American and Canadian. |
| Kurtni O'Hara Database Error Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 3354 | Fentoozler: Would you happen to know the name of the proposed bill? Or the news station it was on so I can look into this more? This interests me, because I just don't see how this could work, with internet rates being different for each company, and a different amount of people using certain computers. |
| Fentoozler Ink Slinger Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 956 | Kurtni Reznor: The Canadian one was CTVnewsnet. I think. I'm not 100% positive because I saw it like a month ago. But I only watch CTV and CBC so it's one of the two, more likely to be CTV though because its 24 hour news >.>. It was an idea at the time and they were going to look into it. I can't remember the American one because the channels confuse the hell out of me |
| andILY. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 2952 | mad as a rabbit: It looks gorgeous. I might as well buy it, I actually have the money to now.I just don't think that downloading a movie to watch with your friends or a couple of songs is the real problem. Contraband and fake cds made in Ukraine, Moldavia or India are. |
| Kurtni O'Hara Database Error Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 3354 | Lovesick.: But you see, it isn't just you with your friends. It's millions of people and their millions of friends. At any rate, even if it was just one person, they're stealing someone elses work. Just because you cannot afford a CD or a movie does not justify stealing it. |
| andILY. Fanfic Fanatic Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 2952 | Kurtni Reznor:Yes but you don't ask money from your friends for the movie, you don't sell it. Contraband cds, on the other hand, are sold. |
