We were in Springfield to lobby for passage of the state Born Alive Infant Protection Act, legislation that would require hospitals to care for infants who survive an abortion. Obama spoke against the legislation in 2001 and 2002 and single-handedly defeated it in committee in 2003.
My friend stood in Obama’s path and said, “Senator, we are going to pass Born Alive here in Illinois this year.”
Obama smiled smoothly and agreed, “I think you will,” adding, “I would have voted for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois had it been worded the same as the federal bill. I think that’s the position the Democrats should take.”
There’s just one thing he forgot to mention: Obama had stopped his committee from adding the federal wording.
With Obama no longer in the state Senate, the Born Alive legislation passed in 2005.

I, personally, am appalled and disgusted.

I don't know where I stand on abortion, but really, this is horrific. I didn't think anyone could honestly live with themselves if they let a baby die like that. |

But I don't entirely understand what this act does. Do some embryos survive abortion due to a botched procedure? Or is it something that just happens to a small percentage of abortions? |

In late-term abortions, the infant sometimes lives. The bill was to keep them from simply putting the baby in the closet and letting it die. Obama thought the babies should be rocked to death. |

The Born Alive Protection Act is to keep infants that survive late-term abortions alive. Not to put them in a closet and let them die, which was what used to happen. |

That's just fucking sick.
With medical care, these babies could survive, correct? |

Some would and some would not. But I believe that they should have been given care to help live. We're talking about living, breathing babies. This is no longer a fetus. This is a child. |

When I was born, I was in worse condition than these babies.
Do I not have a right to live? |

They're not talking about babies born in bad conditions, just babies that were meant to be aborted.
Not that this is an issue any longer. Except for the fact that he could be President and he wanted babies rocked to death. |

The opening is from a completely different article that isn't even associated with Right to Life.
The link to the original my mom sent me is dead. I just typed the headline into Yahoo. |

Of course she had the right to abort. These are late-term so I only agree in the case of the mother's health. But the right to abortion doesn't really play in here. We're talking about shoving children in closets. |

We're talking about shoving children in closets. When someone has an abortion, it's with the understanding that the death of the fetus is justified. I just don't see how you can call that wrong, when you support the intentional death to begin with. |

Because it's no longer a fetus. It's a living breathing human. It was a botched abortion. Things don't always go according to plan. |

It was living, breathing, and human when it was still a fetus. |

Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 2211 | April 18th, 2008 at 03:12pm I think that, in some sense, Obama's opinion is correct on this subject. The mothers have an abortion thinking that they will not have to deal with a child, and that is their choice. When the baby then survives the abortion, the mothers then have to either care for the child themselves, or give it up for adoption. Either way, they are still left caring for a child that they didn't want in the first place.
However, at the same time I can understand the opinions of those opposed to this. I'm kind of gray on this issue. |
