In the UK, unifoms are compulsory at schools usually till the age of 16. Most places say that uniforms help prevent bullying, creating equality for the students and an orderly appearance that leads to more efficient work.

Personally I think uniforms stop people from expressing themselves the way they want, and becme their own people.

Does your school have a uniform or dress code? Do you like/hate it?

I'm a bit iffy with the uniforms, In winter the blazers aren't very thick so your freezing, June-July time You are boiling! And you're not allowed to walk around school with no blazer on which is so horrible.
But the main reasons we have uniforms is to prevent Bullying and to identify what school you're from as there is a lot of vandalism round here.

About the expressing yourself.
Our school say they are all for that but one hint of personalization on your blazer Say a badge for example.
"What is that?! Stop Disgracing the st mary's uniform! Take that badge off at once!"

I've always been to a school with a uniform. I'm all for them if the uniform is nice. I used to think they sucked and it stopped people from being themselves but in my opinion you can still be yourself in a uniform, you just have to make it yours. Like, you make it yours in the way you wear it. Short skirt/long skirt, tie/no tie, personal badges, etc.

In our school they're really strict about uniform Your not Allowed Badges unless thier Charity ones or A cross as we're a catholic school & if you don't have a tie you need a note At lunch you can't even walk around with a jacket over or under your blazer.

I'll admit our uniform is pretty nice compared to some of the other local schools.

Tbh, I don't mind my school uniform.
It's a pair of plain black trousers(Or skirt, if you're a girl)
A white t-shirt with our school badge on it.
And a black jumper(Also with our school badge on it)

We can customize it. But not to 'extremities'
Eg. I have badges on my collar. And all over my bag(We can have any kind of bag. As long as it's suitable for school)

The only problem, is during the summer. You get very hot.

In a private school I have no issues with them because you choose to go to a private school and you accept all their rules. As for public schools, I do not think they have a right to impose uniforms because many people do not get to choose their public school, they go where their district lines put them.

I go to a Catholic school that thinks it is a fancy private school so we have the full skirt and stocking and blazer etc.
We aren't really allowed to change the uniform, or wear jewlery- but how you can customise yourself depends on who your home room teacher is. I happen to have the worst yr 11 home room teacher ever so I can do barely anything.

I like the idea of uniforms and think they (as repetitive as it sounds) help with equality, I mean I can't afford different clothes for every day and frankly I can't be bothered. I do think we should be allowed to customise them a bit.

Also pants in winter for girls would be uber nice as it gets really cold and stocking really do nothing.

I go to private school and we have uniform and to be honest I don't mind that much. While I'd like to have no uniform it prevents bullying and bitching about peoples clothes and it's a hell of a lot easier.

I'm okay with uniform but I think the school has no right to impose rules like 'no long hair, no extra piercings etc'. I think if you give someone something to wear it's fine, but you shouldn't impose rules that take away a persons right to be the way they want.
People need some form of expressing themselves if they can't wear their own clothes.

My school is a public one and has a uniform, we have a couple of choices for shirts at least, you can even buy your own shirt and have the school logo embroidered on it.

Also, you can personalize your uniform by wearing ties, buttons, scarfs, weird colored socks, some people just by regular clothes that match the uniform requirements color wise, then just put the school logo on their shirt somewhere.

Also, at my school a lot of the students don't even wear the official uniform as I said, but some don't even have the logo, but wear a "dress" type thing over a white, red, or black shirt (our tops have to be any one of those colors), then have the dress thing partially cover it.

Our schools seems to be pretty easy uniform wise compared to others.

Personally I think the rules regarding uniform at my school are ridiculous. The headteacher is such a hypocrite; she'll start giving you a row for wearing a white jacket or something, and she goes around wearing fuchsia suits?
And we're required to wear uniform until sixth year, yet there is no dress code for teachers.
If students even above the age of 16 are forced to wear uniform then I think it's only fair that it's compulsory for staff to have some kind of uniform too, no?

My school doesn't have uniforms, though it's been tried many times.
However, we have a fairly strict dress code for the area we live in. "No half-shirts, cut-off shirts, sleeveless shirts, shirts with relealing necklines, or revealing a midriff. No gym shorts, boxer shorts, short-shorts, sweat shorts, or any not to mid-thigh. No cut-up jeans, cut-off jean, cutout jean, ripped or torn jeans, pajama bottoms, cut-off sweat, or anything sut-off. No sunglasses, hats, bandanas, or caps. No coats in class. no peircing other than the ears. And No fluorescent or non-typical hair color."
The last two kill me. I have my nose pierced, and I'm one of the few people at school who wear the ring, others stick to studs. So I get yelled at and they don't. And I like having strange colors in my hair, but now I'm limited to doing it only during the summer. =/
The new one their starting up next year is no hoodies at all. Usually we can wear them during class, but next year they'll be gone altogether. =/ I like my hoodie too.
If we ever do get uniforms, it would most likely be kahki pants with a polo shirt in either green, white, or yellow.
Personally, I wouldn't mind uniforms. I wouldn't have to worry about what to wear from day-to-day. (Though, I only wear jeans and t-shirts anyway). And it'd probably be cheaper too as far as "school shopping" goes.

Unifromed person here.
I don't mind it,
It forces people to express theirselves outside of appearance.
The rules are strict for guys, ties, top button done up, shirts always tucked in, blazer, charcoal grey trousers (I wear brown ^.^) smart shoes (aka leather) no extreme hairstyles or unnatural colours, only two studs in each ear max.
But the enforcement is lax.

But tbh, peoeple say it ruins "expressing personality"
But the best way to do that isn't through fashion (Which would sterotype how people expect people who dress the same as you to act) but through the way we are.

My old school was like that with the ties & blazers and if you didn''t wear them you'd get a detention. Also they made you keep it really neat. It was very frustrating but I understand why they enforce those rules, so we look nice. My school now is more laid back about uniforms, they don't mind a few badges. And you can either choose the dress uniform which is formal with the blazer, tie and long sleeved shirt [+ long pants if you're a guy] or you can choose the uniform which most people wear; school shorts/skirt kilt, short-sleeved shirt and the woolen jersey or the cotton jersey and if you want you can wear the school tie with it. I make it sound really awful, but it's not too bad.

My views are that uniforms limit the ways of expressing yourself, but they do create equality.

I agree.

I go to a private school, and I choose to go there, and my parents choose to pay for it so I am expected to wear the uniform. If I don't want the uniform I don't go. I do get sick of the strictness of the uniform rules, but again, I can't do anything about it except leave the school.

They do limit the ways of expressing or representing yourself with clothes, but hey, it's only school, and they're only clothes. You just have to express yourself in other ways.

I'm from Australia and it's very rare that you will find a school without a uniform.

I think it does create a sense of equality among the students but I know that it doesn't stop people from getting bullied. I get bullied all the time and I wear a school uniform.

there's also the fact that if you where a school uniform, stalkers or child molesters will know where you go to school. there were two girls at my school who were part of an attemted abduction because the people who were trying to kidnap them knew where they went to school.

I think though that, as the person said above me, it's only school. I'll live with it until I leave and then I can wear whatever the hell I want!

I think uniforms do prevent you from being categorized, or 'labeled' - but I see that as a good thing, especially when you first start high/secondary school.

When I was in year 7, people kind of took everyone for what they were as people, because everyone pretty much looked the same. I remember the first non-school uniform day at the end of term so clearly, because I was dressed so much differently to everyone else.

Thing is, as soon as people found out I listened to rock music and was pretty different, I started being called a 'Goth' constantly for about two years, before rock music started becoming more popular and in the mainstream.

Our 6th form dress code is pretty simple and just to keep us smart. No trainers, jeans or hooded tops. I still wear my band shirts and random stripey jumpers though and I'm probably the scruffiest looking person in our year XD

I think uniforms can be a terrible idea - in some cases.

Don't kill me, I think they can prevent bullying within the school as it creates a sense of equality, but it can cause issues with other schools in the area.

We live in Crawley, near a famous school called Hazelwick, and our uniform involves a purple kilt Disgust That causes quite a lot of bullying.
