I'm not against animal testing in the medical field. Without it, I wouldn't be alive, and neither would my younger brother.

It's all well and good to say you're against it. But let's say they made animal testing illegal. Someone close to you get's seriously ill, but there's no treatment for it, because they haven't been able to test on anything. So, this person close to you dies.

Now, I love animals, but I value the life of my friends and family over that of animals. I'd rather my cat die than my mom. I'd be gutted, but I'd rather have a person I care about around than an animal I care about.

Agreed

It sounds cruel, but this is practical; an animal can be replaced, a human being can't

And don't think I mean that nastily, but most of the time when your pets die, don't you just go get another? It hurts, but you can always replace them even if you miss them. Nothing can replace a family member though.

Animal testing for some cosmetics is absolutely ridiculous, mind you, when I use shampoo that is not tested on animals, it turns out crap half the time. Same with face cream - face scream, more like.

For medical purposes, I can understand.

I'm not against in the medical sense, as skank. said. However, though some of the methods seem cruel, think if it can help saves thousands of other people's lives then there is nothing wrong with it. However if it is just for make-up testing I think that's wrong.

^ completely agreed.
I try to make sure the make up I buy is not tested on animals, but as Erin did say, I value the life of my family over that over animals.

I'm, also doing the same. I have to do an argumative essay and I have choosen animal testing as I am against it 100%. I was also wondering if I could quote some of you, but of course I wouldn't use names, just stuff like several teenage girls etc.

Yeah that's fine [well mine anyway], but I think your argument is going to be difficult, especially having to retort about the advantages of animal testing, for medical purposes, make-up etc. If you can come up with a argument against that, you'll be fine. If you can't, revaluate your 100% against it, maybe be 90% against it. Just my advice. Cute
Have fun with it though!

Lol, well we have to say both sides of the argument then in the final paragraph state our opinion and what we think. So its just like a summary of mine own opinion having explained all the advantages and disadvantages.

100%?
I'm assuming you've never suffered from a chronic illness, because if you had, you wouldn't be categorially opposed to animal testing.

I'm 98.9% against it.

Definitely against it for cosmetic purposes.
Medical purposes, I'm of the opinion that if you're creating something for humans, you should test it on humans.
That sounds harsh, but it's how I feel.

My dad had leukemia, I spent a lot of time alone in hospitals, talking to nurses and stuff.
Apparently there's this skin-like substance that can be used to test drugs on, instead of animals.
I don't know whether it would work for everything, but it should be given a chance.

Also, I think someone said that animals can be replaced, but humans can't?
I think they can, people are born everyday.
Again, harsh, but that's what I think.

Do you take medicines yourself? Have you received vaccinations (I know the answer to that is yes) When your dad was ill, did you want the doctors/nurses to do everything they could to help him?

None of that would have been possible without the knowledge gained from animal testing. It's really easy to say you're X% against it- when you don't consider all the aspects of your life it's shaped.

For the amount of animals killed in testing and how quickly, throwing all human rights arguments out the window, I don't think there would be enough people to run the tests on.

What about children's medications? Before any sort of test is ever done on children, the medications are run through vigorous animal testing to do everything possible to perfect the medicine before kids die. How would that same thing be accomplished?

I know for a fact that some medicines when tested in animals have one effect then, when they are tested on humans they have a completely different effect. Morphine is a prime example of this.

It is an imperfect practice - we know this. And reactions vary from animal to animal, species to species, person to person.

Does it mean that every chemical, every medicine, every psychological test to be rendered utterly void if they used animal testing?

What's your point, exactly? That doesn't change the fact that animal testing has lead to major medical breakthroughs.

Strongly against animal testing for cosmetics. It's about time it was banned.

I am for animal testing for medical reasons where no alternatives exist. However, there are now some non-animal alternatives, and I believe that where those alternatives exist, medical research companies should be made to use them. At the moment, using suitable alternatives is optional, so companies who use them opt to do so.

More money should be given to researching for better alternatives, because animal testing is not foolproof. There was an incident in the UK a couple of years ago where six men almost died, after being involved in a trial for a drug which had already passed animal tests. Although thankfully, their lives were saved, they will all carry permanent damage as a result of what happened. I'm sure there are other similar incidents all over the world.

That is why, in the long-term, find alternatives is better for us and for animals.
