But if a band inspired you to change the way you live, and if you like to think that they saved your life, I don't see a problem with that. The term "MCR SAVED MY LIFE" doesn't really bother me because everyone looks at their situation differently and it's up to them to decide who is responsible for their change. |

I think they do because -in my personal experience- I was really depressed and I listened to this one band and it really inspired me not to go out of my way to be suicidal. But they also don't because they are not phisically doing it themselves, they really don't know they saved your life. They are just putting reasons out there to live, dream, and help you get through stuff. |

Of course not instantly, and this doesn't apply to everyone..
About two weeks ago my parents were fighting really badly. There was screaming, shouting crying, things being thrown across rooms etc. I got so upset I could hardly move and had no where to go when I turned on my stereo.
I can actually say, hand on heart, My Chemical Romance did help save my life last night. And every time I feel depressed or down, and I listen to them, it helps me move on. |

i think if you don't want your life whats the point?
you have to want your life, to save yourself.
bands can inspire you, but in the end you have to think DO.I.WANT.TO.LIVE.
you can't base your decision on what a band says.
i hope i explained that well enough. |

Agreed.
My only difference in opinion is that you have to interpret it that way.
You have to interpret their music as them wanting to save you and then save yourself.
I think artists have multiple meanings when they write songs.
It's all about interpretation. |

I believe it is only help a band can give you and the rest is up to yourself. |

Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 378 | July 21st, 2008 at 08:51pm I don't think they can. I mean, some bands have very powerful lyrics, but I still don't think it's possible for them to physically save someone's life.
And some bands don't exactly have very motivational lyrics, so most people who don't feel like life's worth living anymore listen to the songs that involve suicide. There's not many songs like that, but there are some which is more than enough. |

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 1168 | July 22nd, 2008 at 02:06am I've never believed in bands actually saving your life. It always used to annoy me when people went on about it... I won't mention band names but I'm sure you can guess.
However, I do have a lot to thank The Used for. Their music makes me happy and they're close to their fans (they post regularly on Kyte (Y)) and it just seems so much more real. They helped me when someone close to me was dealing with suicidal depression by just lightening my mood when I put on their CD. I've never personally been depressed and I've never needed to be saved, but I would give anything to meet them, and to just say 'thank you' for being amazing and teaching me to not take life too seriously and to have fun, and to speak my mind and to not give a fuck what other people say.
It's not saving my life, it's making me happy. I think that it's just that so many people get the two mixed up. I agree with everyone who has said that only you can save yourself. |

But it is you who has actually done all of the work. |

I always thought that.
But then I dunno shit happened and I realized that I couldn't have done it without these bands. So in a warped way I think bands save lives. |

I can accept that. So I suppose it depends on what the person means by "So&so saved my life."
Definately does. Music can change your mood and give you ideas, but it doesn't make the decision for you.
This entire debate is just a war of definitions... |

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 177 | July 25th, 2008 at 10:03am In all honesty, I personally believe that the only way you can ever save yourself is by being inspired. If your truly in a state of depression you know that you can't be the one to pull yourself out of that hole. hell at times or even most of the time you are your own worst enemy. Whether it be through watching a movie and watching someone get over depression/drug addiction/SI/ED/whatever or listening to music about that it's going to effect you a little on the inside. These things can motivate you and inspire you and seem like a hand reaching out to you.
I mean think about this there is music therapy.
You didn't save yourself on your own or even make the decision over night you slowly become better through that method of therapy. so therefore I believe music does save you whether the band means to or not or even if you acknowledge it or not.
I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense D:

There's a song which I really love. It's quite optimistic but it still makes me cry -- that is, if I listen to the song intently. Then, after crying, I always feel refreshed and I feel as if a little, if not all, of the load on my shoulders were taken off. There was a time when I really felt devastated then the song played. As I listened, I cried harder then after listening to the song a few more times, I felt better.
So, music did not save me but rather, it helped me.

Age: 20 Gender: Female Posts: 351 | July 25th, 2008 at 10:53am Exactly. You have to make the decision, and you have to act upon it. Music is just an inspiration in the same way that other people can be. |
