Age: 18 Gender: Female Posts: 59 | July 26th, 2008 at 01:49am I don't think a band has ever saved my life. But I'm not really a music type of person (crazy I know). The only time I listen to music, is usually when I just wanna block someone or something out. Or sometimes listening to music makes it worse, it makes me think way too much.
So music I think can have two effects on people. It can either lead you to conflict harm on another, or it can help you.
Music can't physically save you, perhaps maybe mentally.
But if someone is really suicidal (in all the cases I've seen) music never helped them. Usually if someone is suicidal they have an imbalance. (usually) but then again I do not know people's home life.
But all in all, The only person that can save you is yourself, you are your own worst enemy.
I think its amazing whenever i see someone, who was "suicidal" before just stand up. It's quite beautiful.
As crazy as that sounds. |

However, if you haven't been in that situation youself, you can't really tell. |

Age: 13 Gender: Female Posts: 259 | July 31st, 2008 at 02:39am I don't think that bands can save lives, unless they are there, in person, to take the pills, knife, etc. out of the persons hand.
I do think that bands' lyrics help people get through a rough time, because maybe they can relate to what said band is saying. |

Ultimately, you decide weather or not you kill yourself, but they can help you keep yourself alive, and if they weren't there it might be different. |

They can save your life in the sense where their music can make you happy and help you when your going through a bad time. Yes, it doesn't physically take the gun/razor/drugs/etc. out of your hand but it can help emotionally. I do believe music can save your life but not in the way that some of you may be thinking. |

It helps you help yourself. I don't think words on a page can save someone's life totally on their own. That person has to be willing to be saved. |

I've had pills in my hands and razors to my wrist
and the only thing that stopped me, the absolute only thing, was thinking about my angel. The most recent time, I cut so deep I could see my vein below a single layer of skin. I could have done it - but it would have been over him. Someone would have told him, and he would have had a death in his name. I stopped myself purely because he is, after all, an angel, and he doesn't deserve to deal with that. |

I think people that truly save others' lives are the loved ones around them.
Hypothetically, if I were to do something drastic to myself, I would think of the people who I loved. How selfish would I be to do this after all they've done for me?
I wouldn't think of a band as my "saviors".
But, that's just me. |

Well, yes, but sometimes people don't have loved ones to cling to. I'm pretty active in the GLBT community. My friend Amber was born a man - her parents threw her out at sixteen because she told them she was a girl.
She literally has no-one to lean on.
Then there's people who are depressed and feel estranged from their loved ones. For a long, long time, I hid my depression from my family because they had their own problems. Both my parents were depressed, and I didn't want to upset them. I couldnt lean on anyone or anything, because nobody knew how much I was suffering. Angel was the only thing I had to cling to.
Its not always the case, but a lot of the time, music can touch people in a way that nothing else can. |

Say, you've been inspired to live because of this one band. That really actually was the band saving you, if you believe hard enough. I don't know, there's this connection I have with their music, and it affects me more than all the time.
You wouldn't be inspired to live if it wasn't for that one band, maybe.
I'm probably not making any sense... |

Point taken. All I'm saying is that I've seen people devote all of their faith to a band, and when said band changed their views, that person was a completely different person.
Personally, I've never had music have an effect on my life in any way. So I don't really think a band can do anything for me. Maybe something will change one day, but all I know is that I don't think bands can have that effect on people. |
Heart-Shaped Box. Cliché Catastrophe
Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 429 | August 22nd, 2008 at 09:19pm I think it's kind of ridiculous to say that a band saved your life. Maybe their lyrics inspired you to get help, or made you feel better during a rough time in your life, but inspiration isn't synonymous to 'life-saving'. Putting your entire faith in a band is just silly; they're just a band, they don't know you personally; they're not gods, they don't have all-mighty powers. When I think of life-saving, I only think of physical saving, like a firefighter helping somebody out of a burning building or something. Somebody singing a song with touching lyrics can really get to you and convince you to get help and get better, but like I said, inspiration isn't synonymous to life-saving. That's just saving your own life, not somebody else saving it for you. |
