Just beause someone wears black and eyeliner does not make them emo.
I wear it. It's cuz I like it. You dig?
I wear black eyeliner...
Whoever says that makes you emo is a complete idiot and fails at life!
Would you like to define emo music for us?
It's a type of rock, known for using metaphors, introspective lyrics, or lyrics that cause emotions to stir in the listener. In the case of some bands, screaming is used. [Well, that's what it is to me at least. Anyone else care to take a crack at it?]
My heart will go on- Celine Dion
Certainly stirs up my emotions. -.-' |

I think what they mean is you should be your own person, not try to fit into a stereotype, just to please others. |

Mine too. Ugh, I love that song. (But would it be considered emo?) |

I concur.
I still don't think labeling yourself is stupid.
If you fit in a label and you realize it, then I think to pretend you don't is relatively stupid. |

According to your definition, a song that causes emotion to stir in the listener would be emo.
I remember watching some thing where Panic talked about emo and Jon mentioned that emo could also mean 'emotional music' and Ryan practically rolled his eyes and said something along the lines of 'imagine putting emotion into your music, what a concept'.
It's also a certain style of music, there's a certain sound to it.
That part was left out of your definition.
To me, it's a sect of pop-punk that uses extremely depressing and emotional themes in their music.
That's just me though... |

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 36 | August 15th, 2008 at 08:18pm Emo is short for Emotive Hardcore which is a type of rock music that developed in the early eighties.
'Emo' how it is used today is totally meaningless. |

Age: 87 Gender: Female Posts: 8 | August 16th, 2008 at 12:22am Wasn't emo originally short for emotive punk, meaning having no cause behind it but rather focusing on personal issues? Or what DropTheDagger said, I've honestly no idea. All I know now is that the new emo gave my friend an excuse to act like an asshole...kind of. It's hard to explain.. |

I agree, but I've never actually heard "emo" music so I'm not really big on this.
A typical conversation with me and randomer about emo.
Torden: Tell me again what emo means.
Randomer: Emotional.
Torden: Then there must be a lot of emo singers - talking about love is an emotion.
The randomer will always counter back with "over-emotional".

-sigh-
I wish it would just end. |

Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 520 | August 19th, 2008 at 05:23pm Emo started out as a type of music (that's what I heard anyways), but now it's just a stereotype/trend that I'm really getting tired of. Also, what really bugs the hell out of me is when people say that goth and emo are the same thing. |

It's a silly fad and the papers, parents and everyone else are taking things out of hand. |

It seems much more like a trend - a stereotype.
I suppose it fits more underneath a trend; it's just something that people like to follow and call themselves. But I wouldn't classify it as a lifestyle...if it is, I'd say it's a very stupid one.
I always thought of the word 'emo' as a type of music genre, not something you'd call a group of people that decided to dress a little different than you'd expect. Personally, I find it sort of offensive and hurtful. |

I think EMO is a genre of music and is not to be used to measure an attitude of a person. |
