You know.
I think EMO is a genre of music and is not to be used to measure an attitude of a person.
Exactly.

That's what I think anyway. It was a genre back in the day and everybody started calling people that wore black, eyeliner and skinny jeans emo. :\

And some people actually think it's cool.
It sickens me.

emo stands for emotional. so i guess if you cry easily, and get depressed easily, you are considered emo.

^ But it's not really like that nowadays, don't you think? :\
I would call it sensitive, not emo.

Everything's based on looks and the kind of music you listen to when it comes to emo. If you listen to this band that falls into the genre of Emo, you're emo. If you wear heavy eyeliner, have bangs, cloths that are black, you're emo.

You know, I always hear people saying the cliched "emo is a music genre", but what would one classify as 'emo music'? People always say that, but never give any examples of bands they would consider 'emo'.

Personally, I would consider bands like My Chemical Romance to be emo (their earlier music, anyway). Now don't get me wrong - I really love MCR. But I feel that they are in fact a tiny bit emo.
And I'm not saying this to flame or be rude, I'm being honest.
I'd really like to know what others consider to be 'emo music', because I know my view will differ from others'.

^ You have a point. Think From what I know, My Chemical Romance hated being called emo for what it standed for like suicide and death and shizz like that.

Gah, right. You caught me, I have no idea what I consider emo music. XD

Yeah. I mean you can listen to all those 'emo' bands but still dress non-emo.
If you dress in all black and stuff, your asking to be called emo.

Emo is a music genre, the stereotype is lame.
Black skinny jeans, eyeliner, side fringes, depressing moods. Rolling Eyes
I think I agree with Human Error about My Chem's early music being a bit emo.
[I'm a huge MCR fan btw, and I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that
'cause I don't mean emo as in the stereotype sort-of emo.]
Maybe a band like Thursday would be classed as emo also?

I guess you could classify any band that has really just emotional or just depressing lyrics as an emo band. I guess My Chem. doesn't want to be called emo (the music genre) because of how tainted it is now.

That's why I said most of the people. Cute
Means not everyone. File

My brother hates emo, and to be honest, I don't like them either but I don't... tell that to their faces. I just don't talk to them. Because all they talk about is cutting and being depressed. Rolling Eyes It's just... like... so... nonsense to me, you know. Shifty I mean, why tell everyone how sad you are and be proud about it? Think

-_- So yeah, I'm being too hard on them.

Emo is "emotive hardcore". It is a music genre, which got mutated into a crappy stereotype. I hate the genre, I think it's horrible, but that's beside the point.

I think there's a lot of debates about what exactly emo is and what bands are emo. I think emo just doesn't exist. Seriously, nobody knows what it is. It's just an undefined word that is floating around the country, which gets sucked into our systems through the air we breathe. It just ends up ruining lives and starting arguments.

Depression is depression, not emo.
Cutting is cutting, not emo.
Wearing black is wearing black, not emo.
And eyeliner is freakin' eyeliner!

I don't understand how something as clear as that causes confusion. I guess people are just dumb.

Emo music is: Rites Of Spring, The Promise Ring, Indian Summer, Texas Is The Reason, and so on...real emo music died off quite a while ago, if you ask me. I'm personally glad it's gone.

I don't hear emo in MCR's music, I really don't. They have a mix of alternative, punk, and classic rock in their guitarring. Gerard's voice is...jazzy and dramatic, nothing like the weak-ish, soft emo voices. Lyrics...I don't think lyrics should be taken into account when specifying a genre for a band. People just write what they feel for the most part, and that can't be "emo" or not emo.

Okay, let's say it really is a genre.
But there are others who keep on insisting they are emo. File

Yes, of course, because the media has already publicized it, by making such a huge deal about so-called emo bands who aren't really emo. And those bands happen to dress in black and wear eyeliner and write sad songs, so people started calling that emo. That doesn't mean that's what it is. Or what it's supposed to be.

And it turned into a stereotype like it was stated a few posts before.

And if you would look at it as a stereotype, it's a couple of people that wear black, eyeliner and tight jeans and they're actually proud of it and think it's cool. They act depressed ebcause they think it's cool. And when they get called emo, they get pissed off and call whoever thinks they're emo preps.

Rolling Eyes Geez. Talk about hypocrits.

But what I think is not all of them do it because they think it's cool, they actually feel that way. And most of the time, when people do dress that way because they really are depressed don't even call themselves emo.

What just really ticks me off are the:

"EMO ROCKS! BUT I STONE!" people. Disgust I'm har don them too, Jojo. I just wanna crumple them up and throw them in the garbage can. Ranting

I also found an interesting journal by x_00.07_x (Rachel) It's a rant about emo or just stereotypes all together.

She has a big point.

OH MY GOD THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I THINK!
This is the main reason why I don't like them. I mean, not all of them are like that but most of them.
Believe me; I've acted like an emo way back in 2006. I know I'm not depressed but I act like I am 'cause... Rolling Eyes I've talked to someone who calls herself an emo and how depressed she is and when I asked why she's sad, she said how hard it is to explain and it feels good, blah blah blah.

Rolling Eyes

I agree with her. Yes

~*~

But anyway, I do believe emo still exists. 'Cause people want it to exist and like us, we won't stop talking about it. tehe

Emo is a label. There are actually people out there who call themselves emo, so then how can it not be a label?

And also, why can't it both a music genre and a label? Why does there have to be this "either or" thing?
