| Veela_Hugz Amateur Author Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 147 | ChemicallyImbalanced: I agree. The number of people who tell me I'm emo is quite annoying. I normally laugh it off, and have alot of other people agreeing with me, that I'm not the stereotype of "Emo". What is the stereotype of "emo"? I truthfully think that most people who calls themselves emo, are attention seekers. I have a friend, she calls herself emo. But anyone who knew her, could look right through her, she's that fake. She slits her wrists for attention, and makes sure people can see. She tells people she's depressed and doesn't have a normal life, yet can never think of a reason why. She doesn't want help. |
| xRawrr Writer's Block Age: 13 Gender: Female Posts: 36 | I've been asked if I was emo before. More than once. And it's the most annoying thing in the world. I don't even believe that emo exists. I think people should forget that term and move on. Emo stereotypes are getting old. |

I always think 'aww' when I see the little kids in my school who label themselves as 'emo'. It reminds me of when I was younger and 'emo' just became a trend, so I thought it was amazingly cool that no one in my school knew what it was. |
| thatfamousgirl Writer's Block Age: 13 Gender: Female Posts: 55 | Well, it was originally a type of music, if that is what you are asking. Then it turned into emotional, which was a way to catigorise (I can't spell worth crap) people into groups by if they had issues or not. Then they shortened it to Emo and put it as a sterotype for If you wear black, skinny-jeans, band shirt, or black eyeliner. Then they added the people that couldn't be catigorized into any of the sterotypes. |
| Lies for a Liar Fanfic Fanatic Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 1168 | This person who lives on my street refers to me as 'that emo across the road', which I find kind of offensive. My friends and I have a joke about emo, like we say that we're so emo with our skinny jeans and side fringes. It's all a sarcastic piss-take on what people have turned emo into, like my MySpace name, ClaireClitoris, is a piss-take on scene names. I don't think people should feel the 'need' to cut themselves because they see others doing it or to follow a fashion, trend or 'lifestyle'. And, like it or not, a lot of people do it for that reason. Most of the time they don't realise they're doing it for that reason. I'm by no means saying that people who listen to 'emo' music cut themselves to 'fit in', I'm just saying that a minority do. I wish people wouldn't make such a big deal out of it, to be honest. |
| Anti-Social Amateur Author Age: 87 Gender: Female Posts: 149 | I truely don't even know what 'emo' is anymore. People generally question me weather I'm emo and if I cut myself. Which I think is ridiculous. I thought 'emo' was a music genre. I'm not even sure I know what a 'emo' band is. |
| sunshines Fanfic Fanatic Age: 25 Gender: Male Posts: 2841 | Year sevens at my school called my friend "emo" and observed her arms. There were no scars present and just concluded she cut her thighs instead. Which none of it was true. People don't know what it means, it's made no significant, positive contribution to society currently, in my opinion. It's just a word, and like all words that are overused they can lose meaning, or not have one at all in the case of "emo". |
| Believe.In.Lies Amateur Author Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 125 | Emo was some sort of music company, called Emotive. Emo is music basically. I don't know who got the bright idea of turning it into fashion, but they really had nothing to do with their time when they did. "Emo", present day, has become into this whole stereotypical fad. Things that were once cool in the 70's and 80's have now come back into the fashion world. Being "emo", however you accomplish the whole "being emo" thing, is just a fad. Within the next couple of years, or even the next year, "emo" will disappear and being a new thing will appear. People just go with whatever is cool right now, even if it means committing self-infliction so you can pull off the "emo look". Sooner or later, people will realize how unreasonable they're being about this whole thing and finally come to their senses. Maybe they'll finally realize to think for themselves and stop following every other clone in the world. |
| die sektor Cliché Catastrophe Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 588 | Believe.In.Lies:The "emo" music and "emo" fashion go somewhat hand in hand though. Some random person didn't just wake up one day and decide to create an "emo" fashion; the fashion was probably brought about because of the people who listened to "emo" music and went to "emo" shows with "emo" bands. Thus a trend started. Born from from what those people wore. But then it went more mainstream and suddenly anything with a bow, anything with spots, anything that has to do with black skinny jeans has become emo. I think it's silly how many things are considered "emo" these days. I mean, someone called me emo because I had a black wallet. I don't even look or dress stereotypically emo.... |
| Amy-Faye Fanfic Fanatic Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 2753 | I get asked a lot if i'm an emo, a lot of people now just don't bother and go right ahead, even though i'm not. I've had friends parents ask me if i am. Random kids, its just annoying. Normally when i ask people what 'emo' means, they just say "you." Which is a pathetic response, but all there little clones laugh along, while i just roll my eyes |
| sunshines Fanfic Fanatic Age: 25 Gender: Male Posts: 2841 | I just think people are quick to judge these days. |
| Freddie Mercury. Grammar Guru Age: 68 Gender: Male Posts: 5551 | sunshines: My sisters did something like that once. I mean, they're awesome, usually, but they started like, cross examining me a while ago. The conversation kinda went: "Do you slit your wrists? Show us!" "No." And then the other was like, "So you cut your legs!" "NO." "SHOW US!" Bleh ![]() |
| My Jersey Boy. Amateur Author Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 121 | I also thought it was short for emotional, but lately. When you hear the word, you automatically think of guys/girls who wear tight jeans, band shirts and way thick eyeliners. |
| I'mNotListening Amateur Author Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 161 | MyJerseyBoy.: It's short for "emotive hardcore" not emotional. |
| DefinitionOf Insanty Writer's Block Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 1 | Emo peoplea are cool and should leave in peace thats all I have to say! |
| Metro Station Fanfic Fanatic Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 1157 | DefinitionOf Insanty: What do you mean by that? First of all, what is an emo kid to you? I don't even know what the term emo is. And I have no side to the "kill them/give them peace" rant because too known to seem to need my attention. Well, in my neighbourhood, and "emo" kid is someone who wears dark clothing, has an Asian haircut, listens to hardcore music and well..cuts themselves. Nope, I don't like that. What is society doing with the term 'stereotypes'? Emo started out to be a genre of music, I can see genre as a person, but judging someone is wrong. Still, the fakes who fake to fit in ( there's one in my school ), they annoy me the most. I don't give a crap of what you listen to / wear, I wanna know you. I don't wanna know that you enjoy pain, it's a little awkward. |
| Mannequin. Queen Cliché Catastrophe Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 378 | I think emo is a clothes trend. At least it is now. |
| oreo cookie. Ink Slinger Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 879 | richard III.: Hey, isn't that a bit harsh? I think it's not the looking that counts, but rather when people choose to stereotype themselves openly. If people didn't do that, I think that there would be less stereotyping. |
| War-Worn Harlot Ink Slinger Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 771 | There are some kids I know, or that attend my school and I have seen them drastically change from normal no-stereotypes to an "emo" or "scene kid". To me it is so irritating beause they have changed into someone they definately arent. They're trying to "fit into the scene" but its obvious they have changed a lot to become that way. With me, I gradually became a stereotype of a scene kid. This year I have moved on from the band shirts, the black nail polish, the obnoixous jewlery and other things and I have found a ton of cute clothes that I never thought I would wear in Abercrombie, Hollister, Wet Seal and other stores. ![]() |
| Electric Feel. Amateur Author Age: 12 Gender: Female Posts: 222 | About two days ago , one girl stopped me and asked if I was emo , to which I shrugged and tried to move past. Her friend said "No , she isn't. She's got minimal eyeliner on." Then she paused and asked "Can I see your wrists?". She reached out and pulled at my arm , which I immediately drew back , and walked away. I heard her say "She really is emo then." It kinda proves that emo is no longer about the music , just a stereotype attached to small things like make up and big things like disorders. |
