But only when it comes to math. If I had to tutor, it'd probably be for Reading Skills, English, or Literature. And I guess that if people needed help in art, I could... but... I think everyone pretty much grasps art. |

It's a woman I know who goes to a local college. Her daughter is going into first grade next year and I was offered to tutor her in math and reading.
I've never tutored before, but I have taught my cousin how to read and one of my friends to study, so I'm thinking the hardest part will be to get her to pay attention for long enough.
I just have one question; what would be a decent price to charge for tutoring? I'd like it to cover my gas milage to get there and back at least. I just don't want to tell her too much since she's still working on going to college so her budget isn't exactly endless. |

so they can see what you're doing and hear it too. I hope this helps. xD |

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 7016 | July 5th, 2008 at 09:39am I really need the money, so I'm thinking about tutoring.
The only thing is, I'm not sure what people want me to tutor.
I could teach singing, I suppose, or piano.
Then again, I could do maths or science for the younger kids.
Or even computers. |

Pick something you know you are good at.
Maths and science for younger kids would be better, because you already know all that.
Subjects are much easier to tutor in.
Tutoring in piano is fun. I tutor 3 five year olds.
It's really up to what you want to do. Don't pick something that you know you will get bored of teaching someone. |

Iono... I just see it as a very easy way of earning money... especially if you are perficent in that topic. |

Age: 18 Gender: Female Posts: 179 | August 4th, 2008 at 10:50pm I've been asked to tutor one of my friends in maths but I just don't think I have the patience. I am like one of those 'Kumon tutors' and have very little patience if someone's not understanding the basics.
I wouldn't mind going back to the basics but seeing as it's my friend, I don't want to sound patronising. I don't know how to teach without dumbing it down massively, and her dad's pretty harsh on her about it so she's not got much confidence in the subject. Thing is, seeing as they're the same age as me, I don't want them to scoff and just make me out to be some snob who thinks they're better than everyone. But I can see me coming off that way. Anyone got any tips? |

In the past I've tutored a few people with instrument lessons. It made me feel so good teaching them how to play an instrument! |

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 18639 | August 11th, 2008 at 01:21pm I do this thing called peer tutoring. People from year 11 tutor people in year 7 who have learning difficulties, or who need to improve their reading/comprehension skills.
I love reading, and I want other people to enjoy it too, so that's why I do it. Unfortunately I've had two of the most horrible tutees, who have massive attitude problems and refuse to give reading a chance, so my tolerance for them is a bit lower than normal. Some of the other year seven kids are really nice though.
Most people in my year who do it are only doing it for the leadership program so they can get prefect next year... I, personally, don't give a shit about that, so I'm just doing the tutoring 'cause reading is good.

I do something similar, except that in my school it's the sixth formers who are tutoring the year sevens. We do it in our free lessons and it's really good to do. |
